Its gameplay was so addicting that there were lines out the door. People were even getting into fistfights over who was next in line to play Polybius. Apparently, the game cost you more than just a quarter, though… because players started suffering from severe health issues afterwards. Hallucinations, night terrors, amnesia, insomnia, even seizures. People said it did something to their mind, something underneath the gameplay and graphics. Every few days, men in black suits started coming into the arcades and collecting information from the machines. It’s theorized that psychoactive subliminal messaging was hidden in the game and being tested on the unknown public. After a month, all the Polybius arcade machines disappeared without a trace. The game was largely forgotten about until rumors started appearing online in the 90s. In 2006, someone came forward claiming that they worked on Polybius. Steven Roach said he was a programmer on the game. He shared that the graphics and gameplay were lightyears ahead of what was out there at the time. However, he claims the game caused a young boy to have an epileptic seizure and that’s what caused the game to be pulled from arcades. All evidence of the game existing is anecdotal, at best, and there’s nothing concrete. There have been TV shows and games based on the legend of Polybius, but no copies of the game’s code or arcade cabinets have ever been found. Was Polybius real? They were also terribly afraid of cars and would run and scream when one passed.
