Before starting your painting in oils or acrylics do a little preparation. First a value study thumbnail sketch. I like using watercolor pencils. When happy with with the values and composition move onto a color thumbnail painting. When happy with basic colors you can start the main event. This builds confidence and reduces basic errors.
