This is one of the reasons I remove the engine to do Tdi clutches - you can test the operation of the release mechanism before fitting as it is all in place. After fitting the old leaking condenser, it is important to test the system for other leaks you may not have found. I like to test under pressure and vacuum. The cost of the vacuum pump and gauges etc. Were under C$250 and paid for themselves after 3 jobs. I am no expert on A/C, and fortunately there were no other issues to diagnose, but by using simple pressure and vacuum tests, you can find out if the system is OK before you charge with gas. IF you have to work on A/C and the system is already charged, you should take to to an A/C shop to remove the old refrigerant - DO NOT let the gas out into the atmosphere!
