Analyst Warns of Increased Bitcoin Volatility as Futures Traders Step In. Bitcoin’s price spiked above $20,000 earlier today but is still up around 1.4% on the day. Now, analysts are warning that volatility is likely to increase as the open interest builds up and futures traders step in. The open interest on the most recent pump increased by a whopping $615 million in just a few hours. The market added some $50 billion in the past day as Bitcoin's price is testing the critical level of $20K, which also contains the highs from the cycle in 2017-2018.

Tax regulator treats crypto assets as digital property, hence Aussies who sell their digital assets, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are expected to calculate and record their capital gains or losses in their tax returns. For clarity, capital gain or capital loss is the difference between the price of an asset at the time it was purchased and the price at the. time it. was disposed of. The ATO intends to focus on three other key areas – record-keeping, work-related expenses, and rental property income and deductions. Aussies are expected to keep good records of their crypto transactions. Anyone who deliberately reports inaccurate capital gains on their crypto assets may face tax penalties from the ATO after an audit. ATO has previously warned crypto traders about the risks they face by reporting incorrect figures for tax purposes.

Global Watchdogs to Regulate Stablecoins Following TerraUSD (UST) Fiasco. The United Kingdom Treasury revealed plans to legalize stablecoins as a payment medium in the country. The move comes as part of the financial legislation mentioned in the Queen’s Speech. The organization has no plans to add any algorithmic stablecoins to the proposed legislation. South Korean regulators have launched an emergency check on trends and are currently making plans to enact legislation. Dubbed the Basic Act on Digital Assets, the proposed legislation will reportedly include consumer protection. Watchdogs want to create an opportunity for financial consumers to become aware of the risks of investing in virtual assets.

Soccer Team RCD Espanyol to Become the First Spanish Club to Accept Crypto Payments. RCD Espanyol will allow its supporters to buy tickets, food and beverage during matches, and merchandise products in bitcoin, ether, and other digital assets. The club partnered with Crypto Snack, a financial application based in Barcelona and Estonia, which has a native iGaming token, called SNACK. Mexican soccer team Tigres allows fans to buy passes for matches in crypto. The team partnered with Bitso to make it possible. The President of the team hinted that this might not be the last cryptocurrency endeavor initiated by the team.

97% of Crypto Hacks Were Against DeFi Projects: Report. $1.7 billion worth of digital assets were stolen by perpetrators in 2022, with 97% coming from DeFi protocols. Money laundering and DeFi hacking have been the two major criminal activities on such protocols, Chainalysis’ report shows. Most stolen funds have gone to hackers with ties to North Korea. NFT Wash Trading is a form of market manipulation that artificially inflates an illiquid asset. Wallets controlled by the same entity can trade NFTs in between, giving market participants a wrong perception that the demand for the asset is higher than its actual level.

SEBI report warned prominent public figures of being held responsible for making endorsements that prove to violate the Consumer Protection Act, Foreign Exchange Management Act, and Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) ASCI Guidelines were introduced in February this year, and taxation proposals in budget 2022-23 for the crypto sector used the term. The reference to VDA is purely for taxation purposes, and it doesn't mean the legalization or regulation of digital assets. The SEBI recommendation to make celebrity endorsement tough for crypto products is the latest in a series of strict policy decisions by Indian authorities. This follows a steep 30% income tax on digital asset profits, effective April 1, 2022.

The 50-day and 100-day moving averages have completed a bearish crossover, which might increase the odds of lower prices. Crypto Price Analysis May-13: Ethereum, Ripple, Cardano, Solana, and Shiba Inu. ETH has recovered above $2,000 and has found good support at $1,900. ETH lost 22% in the past seven days, with the largest selling volume taking place on Thursday. There are signs of optimism that the spike in volume yesterday may indicate a possible reversal in the downtrend. XRP took a nosedive yesterday to a level not seen since February 2021 at $0.336 (Binance) The selloff was sharp, and since then, XRP’s price has recovered to some extent. Overall, it lost 25% in the past seven days. ADA performed the worst in the past seven days, losing 28% of its valuation. Yesterday, its price fell to $0.40 (Binance), where it found support, and now it sits just under the key resistance. The volume spiked yesterday but now seems to decrease, which should lower volatility.

Alan Howard’s Crypto Company Bags $70M in a Funding Round Led by Barclays and Goldman. Goldman Sachs' investment in Elwood Technologies is the first time the company has sourced outside financing and brought the company’s valuation to $500 million. The fundraising event saw contributions from several other notable investors, including German bank Commerzbank, venture capitalist Dawn Capital, and Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital. Elwood is optimistic that traditional financial institutions, including hedge funds and banks, will continue to maintain a strong interest in investing in the crypto space. Elwood's investment round was already in motion before the latest black swan event shredded about 15% from the global crypto market cap.
Binance Seeks to Strengthen its Legal Team. Majority of open positions are with Binance Holdings Ltd., the company responsible for all firm activities outside of the US. At the time of writing, two positions in the legal division at Binance US are taking applications. The value of all digital assets has taken a tumble of over $500 billion since the start of May alone. Many crypto exchanges are making a concerted effort to increase regulatory oversight that could prevent future tomfoolery.
European Union Could Start Testing a CBDC in 2023, ECB Executive Says. Panetta said the digital euro could boost the European economy when used as legal tender among all EU members. He also noted that the ECB and other institutions will help stimulate adoption through various tactics, including a heavy advertising campaign. Panetta said the digital euro could help preserve confidence in fiat money by helping to maintain its role as a monetary anchor in the digital age. He said stablecoins are vulnerable and have no guarantee to be redeemable at any given time.

LUNA's supply of LUNA has skyrocketed to over 6.5 trillion as of now from 350 million on May 9. The world’s largest crypto exchange suspended LUNA and UST spot trading shortly after doing so to the LUNA coin-margined perpetual contracts. The latter, being an algorithmic stablecoin, essentially allowed users to profit by arbitraging it against LUNA ever since it started to de-peg from the USD.
Elon Musk Explained Why His Twitter Acquisition Is on Hold. Elon Musk informed that his acquisition of Twitter had been delayed because of issues related to fake accounts and scams on the popular social medial platform. Musk updated on May 13 that the deal has been put “temporarily on hold pending details supporting” this claim. His buyout offer, worth approximately $44 billion, was accepted in late April. Peter Schiff, one of the most vocal BTC critics, was quick to comment on Musk’s post, suggesting that the billionaire never actually intended to buy Twitter.
FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried Buys 7.6% Stake in Robinhood, HOOD Surges 23%. Bankman-Fried bought a stake in Robinhood because he regards it as an “attractive investment. Robinhood, through its communications team, echoed this statement in a tweet. Robinhood decided to dabble in crypto trading in 2018. Thereafter, the firm’s revenue shot up to $1.8 billion in 2021, from $278 million in 2019. Funded accounts also increased from 5 million to 22 million.

The Treasury Department announced sanctions against BitRiver, prohibiting it from having business relations with US citizens. BitRiver argued that it is a 100% private company with no affiliated interest with the Russian government. The Russian mining giant called the action by US authorities “irresponsible. IMF warned that Russia could use cryptocurrencies to boost their mining industry to evade sanctions. Binance CEO CZ said in an interview last month that nobody smart would choose to do that because it is too traceable.
Nomura Launches Over-the-Counter Bitcoin Derivatives. Nomura's over-the-counter bitcoin futures and options will be available to institutional clients. They will be non-deliverable and have to be settled in cash. Nomura to launch more derivatives related to bitcoin. Demand from institutional and private investors for such services has been growing. Nomura expects the sector to mature over time and become more regulated. Nomura became the first crypto custody bank through a new venture called Komainu in May 2018. It partnered with crypto security and infrastructure solution provider Ledger and bitcoin-specialist investment manager Global Advisors. The move was expected to unlock institutional investors’ interest in digital assets.
