"I had cancer while pregnant in 2013. I received all the treatment I needed in Ireland including radiotherapy and chemotherapy without any hesitation from my doctors. Amnesty International are incorrect when they falsely claim that women with cancer in pregnancy are being denied treatment here, and are forced to travel because of Ireland's ban on abortion. This is simply not true."
Irish women receive all treatment necessary for cancer, whether they are pregnant or not, and have always done so. Audrey McElligott is one such woman who received world-class cancer treatment in Ireland during her pregnancy. Doctors knew that Ireland’s abortion ban did not restrict them in treating Audrey and in also caring for her baby. Abortion is not needed to treat cancer or any other condition arising in pregnancy.
Abortion campaigners, including Amnesty International, are telling women that they can’t access medical treatment for cancer because of Ireland’s abortion laws. This is untrue. As confirmed in recent official Parliamentary hearings*, pregnant women with cancer or other life-threatening conditions are never denied life-saving treatment in Ireland because of our pro-life constitutional clause.

1. Recent Oireachtas Committee hearing heard from leading experts stated that that a) They were not aware of any woman who had been denied life-saving treatment because of Ireland’s ban on abortion and b) They were not aware of any instance where a woman had been denied a termination of pregnancy in order to save her life (where the baby is delivered to save the mother’s life and the doctor also tries to save the baby). Ob/Gyns also confirmed at later hearings that cancer can be treated in the pregnant patient without recourse to abortion.
