According to this book, the United States is currently in a moment of crisis, fomented by anxieties around race and gender politics. Unlike fear, which is usually focused on a particular object, anxiety is indeterminate and uncertain. It is also the emotion that led to the election and continued support of President Trump. But Caron Gentry says that we can deal with this anxiety in a productive way. To do so, she turns to Reinhold Niebuhr, whose philosophy of Christian realism has been an abiding influence on foreign policy since the Cold War. According to Niebuhr Mans capacity for justice makes democracy possible but mans inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary. Anxiety is central to Niebuhrs ideas an emotion that is abiding because we lack control over the circumstances of our lives. In turn, anxiety prompts a desire for unity, but also an intolerance for difference. Niebuhr suggests that anxiety can be dealt with destructively or creatively, and that power must be balanced to prevent destructive action. Gentry is critical of Niebuhr, saying that he gives in to destructive tendencies in humans by elevating power above other, more creative solutions. In This American Moment, she offers feminist Christian realism as an alternate approach to anxiety in international politics. Gentrys feminist Christian realism differentiates itself from Niebuhrs Christian realism by re-engaging the importance of love and relationships over power. It suggests that we can arrive at creative solutions to anxiety through a conversation about the imago dei and the inherent commitments to community borne of ones relationship with God, including the recognition of obligation in the face of vulnerability. Throughout Gentry applies her ideas to the problems of police brutality, womens reproductive health, and the rise in fascist politics. ****

In early modern Korea, the Choson state conducted an extermination campaign against the Kaesong Wang, descendants of the preceding Koryo dynasty. It was so thorough that most of todays descendants are related to a single survivor. Before long, however, the Choson dynasty sought to bolster its legitimacy as the successor of Koryo by rehabilitating the surviving Wangsgranting them patronage for performing ancestral rites and even allowing them to attain prestigious offices. As a result, Koryo descendants came to constitute elite lineages throughout Korea. As members of the revived aristocratic descent group, they were committed to Confucian norms of loyalty to their ruler. The Choson, in turn, increasingly honored Koryo legacies. As the state began to tolerate critical historical narratives, the early plight of the Wangs inspired popular accounts that engendered sympathy. Modern forces of imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, urbanization, industrialization, and immigration transformed the Kaesong Wang from the progeny of fallen royals to individuals from all walks of life. Eugene Y. Park draws on primary and secondary sources, interviews, and site visits to tell their extraordinary story. In so doing, he traces Koreas changing politics, society, and culture for more than half a millennium. **

Virginia Aksan, McMaster University This book will be useful because of its readability, clarity, and the way it unites the different strands of political, religious, social, and economic history. Linda T. Darling, University of Arizona From the Back Cover Ottoman charitable endowments (waqf) constituted an enduring monument to imperial beneficence and were important instruments of policy. One type of endowment, the public soup kitchen (imaret) served travelers, pious mystics, and local indigents alike. Constructing Ottoman Beneficence examines the political, social, and cultural context for founding these public kitchens. It challenges long-held notions of the nature of endowments and explores for the first time how Ottoman modes of beneficence provide an important paradigm for understanding universal questions about the nature of charitable giving.

From BooklistStarred Review For 60 years the Dictionary of American History (DAH) has been the unrivaled source of choice for information about the history of the U.S. from its precolonial days on. In its new edition it reflects recent trends in the ways in which American history is studied, taught, and interpreted. This means shedding the vestiges of the political and military emphases of its 1940 first edition and thoroughly incorporating analytical filters such as race, gender, ethnicity, and class in making sense of the American story. It also means a more synthetic approach. While retaining its alphabetical organization running from the first volume through the eighth, this edition has reduced the number of entries from more than 7,100 to 4,434. DAH continues to eschew biographical entries in deference to other plentiful sources of biographies of contributors to American history (in fact, DAH was originally intended to be used in conjunction with the publishers Dictionary of American Biography, which has been continued as The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives). However, it has helpfully introduced maps and illustrations as well as an archival volume. This supplement consists of maps accompanied by commentary depicting American territory from around 1550 to 1855, the Civil War era, and lower Manhattan from 1675 to September 12, 2001. The bulk of the supplementary volume presents transcriptions of primary documents. These range in topic and time from Powhatans 1607 plea for peace to John Smith to the nativist American Party platform of 1856 to an excerpt from Upton Sinclairs The Jungle to Stokely Carmichaels Black Power speech of 1966 to Al Gores December 2000 concession speech. See references link the primary documents to entries in the dictionary proper and vice versa. In the dictionary itself readers will find the same sort of informative articles they have come to expect, including articles on topics they now assume will be covered. These include an eyes-wide-open treatment of college athletics, the lobbying power of the AARP, the Clinton impeachment, sexually transmitted diseases, and the 911 attack and its aftermath. Even brief entries, such as the one on home-shopping networks, conclude with an up-to-date bibliography and see also references to related articles. An extensive alphabetical index offers access to these riches. A complementary access tool, a guide to eras of American history, correlates relevant chapters in several very recent textbooks with lists of articles in the dictionary. There are now other encyclopedias of American history available. Academic libraries confined to one option should go with the DAH. Public libraries need to consider whether users are most likely to be high school students or college students and college-educated adults (in which case DAH). RBB American Library Association. lt

Gottfried Wile Leibniz was one of the central figures of seventeenth-century philosophy, and a huge intellectual figure in his age. This book from Glenn A. Harz (editor of the influential Leibniz Review) is an advanced study of Leibnizs metaphysics. Hartz analyzes a very complicated topic, widely discussed in contemporary commentaries on Leibniz, namely the question of whether Leibniz was a metaphysical idealist, realist, or whether he tried to reconcile both trends in his mature philosophy. Because Leibniz is notoriously unclear about this, much has been written on the subject. In recent years, the debate has centered on whether it is possible to maintain compatibility between the two trends. In this controversial book, Hartz demonstrates that it is not possible to maintain compatibility of idealist and realist views - they must be understood as completely separate theories. As the first major work on realism in Leibnizs metaphysics, this key text will interest international Leibniz scholars, as well as students at the graduate level.

When cognitive behavior therapy emerged in the 1950s, driven by the work of Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck, basic behavior principles were largely sidelined in clinical psychology curricula. Issues in cognition became the focus of case conceptualization and intervention planning for most therapists. But as the new third-wave behavior therapies begin to address weaknesses in the traditional cognitive behavioral models-principally the modest effectiveness of thought stopping and cognitive restructuring techniques-basic behavior principles are once again attracting the interest of front-line clinicians. Many of todays clinicians, though, received their training during the years in which classical behaviorism was not a major part of clinical education. In order to make the best use of the new contextual behaviorism, they need to revisit basic behavioral principles from a practical angle. This book addresses this need. The ABCs of Human Behavior offers practicing clinicians a pithy and practical introduction to the basics of modern behavioral psychology. The book focuses both on the classical principles of learning as well as more recent developments that explain language and cognition in behavioral and contextual terms. These principles are not just discussed in the abstract-rather the book shows how the principles of learning apply in the clinical context. Practical and easy to read, the book walks clinicians through both common sense and clinical examples that help them learn to use behavioral principles to observe, explain, and influence behavior in a therapeutic setting.**
