On the 6F of the Pokémon Tower, you’ll witness a ghost of some sort just as you’re about to approach the stairs to the 7F. This requires the Silph Scope that is obtained after defeating Giovanni in the Team Rocket HQ. Using the Silph Scope, this will reveal the identity of Cubone’s deceased mother. Marowak is on Level 30. Because it inhabits the spirit of the ghost, it cannot be captured regardless of any ball you throw so you have no choice but to defeat it. After you defeat it, its soul will depart to the afterlife and you can rescue Mr. Fuji on the 7F.

Vermilion City’s gym contains trash cans. Interact with the trash can to see which one has a switch under it. Once you find the first switch, find the other one. If you’re wrong on the 2nd one, you’ll have to find the first one again. If you find both switches in a row, the motorized doors will open so you can battle the gym leader. Lt. Surge uses Electric type Pokémon. Most Electric type moves can paralyze targets. If you have any Ground type Pokémon, like Diglett for example, that type won’t suffer anything from Electric type moves. After the battle, you’ll receive the Thunder Badge and a TM24 (Thunderbolt). Thunderbolt has a 10% chance of paralyzing the target.
