Taiwan’s Most Beautiful Railway Line - Exploring Pingxi by Train - Taiwan 2023
Cutting through the mountains around the east of Taipei is the once bustling Pingxi Line. It serves as a reminder to bygone times when the area thrived as a busy mining community.
These days the stations along this hundred year old railway line are popular getaways for tourists looking to explore the historic streets, explore hiking trails and snack on famous foods. Offering some of the most scenic spots in Taiwan it is worth spending a day out of the capital. It is a must for any traveler to come explore these beautiful places.
The largest station along the Pingxi Line, Shifen is full of things to do. The area is most famous for the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival where people write wishes on Chinese paper lanterns and release them into the sky.
I show you step by step how to get there as well as the prices for everything. It is very easy to get there and see for yourself the beauty of Taiwan.
Shifen
A short walk from the station is Shifen Waterfall, as the widest falls in Taiwan, it's often touted as the island's most beautiful waterfall. It's worth stopping in Shifen just to see the stunning scenery here and is only about 30 minutes of walking from the station.
Pingxi
While most people head to Shifen for releasing the Chinese lanterns, you can also buy them around Pingxi Station as well. There tends to be less people around Pingxi Station, the town around the tracks isn't as large and Shifen's, but it has a similar old street with shops and food stalls to explore.
Jingtong
Most people don't make it as far as the last station along the Pingxi Line, it's a shame however as Jingtong is a beautiful small town that's perfect for photographers. The town contains a number of picturesque buildings dating back to when it prospered as a mining settlement.
There are a total of 8 stops along the line and if you wish to see and explore all of them it is more like a two day trip if you try to see everything. It is an amazing area with beautiful scenery and historic towns along the rail line. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to explore Taiwan.

Wat Prot Sat also written as Wat Prodsat is an ancient Ayutthaya era temple built south of Ayutthaya in the Bang Pa-in district.
Wat Prod Sat is located at Tambol Kanon Luang, Ampur Bang Pa-in, Phranakorn Si Ayutthaya Province. The ancient remains in the temple consist of the principal square-bell shaped pagoda with twelve rabbeted on the angles facing North West towards the Chao Phraya River, a chapel in front of the principal pagoda was newly restored in 2474 in the Buddhist calendar (1932). Next to the main hall 2 small shrines were built over the old ones.
In front of the chapel, there are 6 twelve rabbeted angled pagodas. From the architectural and artistry form of the ancient remains In Wat Prod Sat, it was assumed that the temple was built in late Ayutthaya period. Later on, it was ministered by Krom Luang Wongsathirachsanit in Rattanakosin period.
The temple was important during the Ayutthaya era in that it was used as a tax collection point of boats coming into the city from the gulf. It is also believed that it was the location where King Naresuan led troops in the Battle of Nantureng. King Naresuan led the navy to attack the Phra Maha Uparaja camp until it was destroyed.
The temple itself is very nice. It was fun to be able to walk around the temple and see how much work is required to restore a historical temple so it can be continued to be used by the locals. I’ve been watching the restoration and I really like how everything has turned out.

Amphawa Floating Market or Amphawa Evening Market is one of the largest and oldest floating markets in Thailand. The market is located in Samut Songkhram province, just 70 kilometers southwest of Bangkok and it takes approximately 1.5 hours to get there from the Thai capital.
As Amphawa Floating Market is not far from Bangkok, it makes this place a popular weekend destination for both locals and tourists who like to come here and enjoy a relaxing Thai style shopping atmosphere.
Amphawa has a long history reflecting Thai heritage. It was considered to be an important water transportation hub of Samut Songkhram province. Not surprisingly, Amphawa was also a commercial hub with a large floating market and waterfront community.
One of the highlights of Amphawa Floating Market is a large selection of delicious food. With the abundance of Samut Songkhram province, many fresh vegetable and fruit shops are lined up waiting for buyers.
At Amphawa Floating Market you can expect to see vendors selling food and beverages such as fried clams, grilled squids, noodle, coffee and Thai desserts on their boats.

Kata and Kata Noi are in my mind in the top 5 beaches in all of Thailand. The combination of amazing sand, surrounding area and atmosphere make it a must see beach. I’ve stayed in the area many times and it’s always where I want to stay each time.
Kata Beach is a 1.5-km strip of golden sand and is considered one of the most popular beaches in Phuket due to its combination of beauty, facilities and activities. Hundreds of people come each day to soak up the sun and swim in the sea. Often busy but never crowded, this beach is pleasing in many ways.
Kata Noi Beach is a great place to relax and soak up the sun. At about 700 metres long, it's one of Phuket's smaller beaches. Soft sand, crystal clear water, and the lush green jungle backdrops are the main draws here. Kata Noi is on a dead-end road, so the only traffic you might encounter is if you're looking for a place to park your car.
Both beaches are located just south of Karon Beach and very easy to get to. In this video I give you an idea of what to expect if you visit here.

Old Delhi has always charmed visitors from all over the world. Today filmmakers seem to be fascinated by Chandni Chowk and markets like this. Walking in the streets, which were a part of Shahjahanabad, takes you back to the city as it used to be.
Meena Bazaar was where the royal ladies used to come shopping for their silks, jewels and for their bangles. It was located between the mosque and the red fort, hence easily accessible to them.
What you see now is very different than in the royal times. It still sells the clothes and that too is meant for special occasions like weddings. It sells blankets in bright colors and a whole lot of religious items associated with Islam.
What definitely remains even today, probably from the Mughal era is the Islamic character of this bazaar. Where not only are the buyers and sellers primarily Muslims but also the merchandise sold has some imprint of Islam.
The market is alive with activity. There is a lot to see from clothes to food. It’s an open air market that is open daily and a nice stop if you are visiting the Red Fort or the Jama Masjid mosque in Old Delhi.

Singburi province is steeped in folklore and famous for the brave heroes of Bang Rachan who fended off the Burmese army against huge odds. This gives the area a great deal of historical importance to the Thai people.
The heroes of Bang Rachan were famously known for their self defense camp, which fended off the Burmese army with only a few soldiers and civilians. Thai’s all know the story as its taught in schools from a young age.
Bang Rachan Memorial Park and the Heroes of Khai Bang Rachan Monument pay tribute to the heroic villagers of Bang Rachan who bravely fought against the Burmese army in 1765. And in spite of being outnumbered by more than 10 to one, the Burmese soldiers had to make eight attacks before the Thai villagers were overrun due to their lack of weapons.
One vintage market in Bang Rachan takes visitors back to those days of glory. The Bang Rachan Old Style Market opened in 2016 to preserve the historical importance of Bang Rachan using period construction, costumes, tools, and settings as even the vendors dress up exactly like people from that period.
Visitors can even rent a Thai costume of their own with various styles to choose from. That way they can take pictures in the historical market setting or with the actor ‘warriors’ guarding the fictitious gate of Bang Rachan.
The market has vendors selling all of the Thai favorites as well as regional cuisine and local products. You can also see a reenactment of the famous battle where the actors perform on a stage next to the river.
Ban Rachan Old-style Market is located about 2-3 hours north of Bangkok in Singburi. There are many other things to see and do in this area making it a great day trip from the city.

The small island of Koh Larn is also called Coral Island. It lies only 7 km from the coast of Pattaya, so this tropical island is often visited as a day trip from Pattaya. If you want to enjoy this island longer you can also stay overnight. Koh Larn is also one of the closest islands to Bangkok, you are there in a few hours which makes it a nice escape from the city.
Tawaen Beach is the most visited beach on Koh Larn and therefore, especially on weekends, it can be very crowded. The beach is a favorite for its pearly white sand and clear water. It is also easily accessible because boats can dock on the left side of this beach. A little more peace and quiet can be found on the far right side of Tawaen Beach, as most visitors to the beach do not walk all the way. On the left side of the beach is the small Sangwan Beach, you can also reach it from the pier.
Tawaen beach has everything you need to enjoy yourself for a whole day or more. There are long rows of sunbeds with umbrellas (100 baht rental) and a walking street with restaurants and stores. You can rent big rubber tubes and take a ride on a jet ski or banana boat. The sea water is shallow for a long stretch, making it a good beach for families with small children.
The beach is an easy day trip from Pattaya as well as a weekend trip from Bangkok. If you travel to Koh Larn this is the best and most popular beach on the island.

Wat Phra Si Mahathat Worawihan วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร is a Buddhist temple in the Bang Khen District of Bangkok. Construction began in 20 March 1941 in commemoration of the government victory over the Boworadet rebellion in 1933. Wat Phra Si Mahathat was designated a first-class royal monastery in 1942, making it one of the most significant temples in Thailand.
Intended to be called Wat Prachathipatai วัดประชาธิปไตย Temple of Democracy, the temple was the initiative of Prime minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram. The temple would be the first temple built by the state, after the introduction of democracy following the Siamese revolution of 1932. The temple would be built close the Constitution Defense Monument in Bang Khen District's Lak Si Circle, which was near the site of a battle between the government led by the Khana Ratsadon (People's Party) and royalists under Prince Boworadet in 1933. The temple is significant: "not only for the government to ideologically proclaim their victory over the conservative royalists, but also to symbolize the efforts by the People’s Party to shape the political landscape of the country."
In 1940, Thawan Thamrongnawasawat the Minister of Justice was made a special envoy and sent on a mission to British India. As result of this trip the minister received a piece of the Buddha's relic found at Dharmarajika Stupa, Taxila, modern day Pakistan. Thawan also brought back five branches of the Bodhi Tree (at the Mahabodhi Temple) and some soil samples from various sacred Buddhist sites. The government decided to enshrined all of these relics at the temple and the temple's name was changed to Wat Phra Si Mahathat (Temple of the Sacred relics). In 1941 the government raised the status of the temple to that of a first-class royal monastery and the name was altered to Wat Phra Si Mahathat.
The construction of the temple was completed on 24 June 1942, precisely on the tenth anniversary of the revolution.

Lopburi is a large province in Central Thailand. The provincial capital is also called Lopburi and is one of Thailand’s oldest cities.
Prehistoric artifacts have been discovered in the area; it was a major settlement during the Dvaravati era (between the 6th and 11th centuries), and it was also an important town during the Khmer period. It came under Thai rule in the late 13th century and served briefly as a Siamese capital.
Today, Lopburi has two distinct areas: the Old Town and New Town. Most places of interest to tourists can be found in the atmospheric Old Town. There are fascinating Ancient Ruins to explore, and part of the town is overrun with mischievous crab eating macaques.
Many people start around Wat Prang Sam Yod, an ancient Khmer period temple that is also known as the Monkey Temple. Although small, the ruins are interesting, with three prangs and a large stone Buddha statue. It’s also easy to see the Khmer influence in the architecture.
There are many small temple ruins to see as well as the former royal palace of King Narai. Other interesting things to see include the oldest building in the city, the city wall and so much more.
The best part about exploring places like this is you never know what you will see.
