Swarm trap catching a swarm 6 5 2013
Swarm trap catching a swarm 6 5 2013

This video was posted on June 5, 2013. The prior spring (2012) I built 4 swarm traps. Since I use Warre hives, which are a type of top bar hive, I constructed the traps to accept the top bars. However the traps are longer than the Warre hive boxes to create enough space for the swarms.

I set the traps out and baited them with a small amount of lemongrass oil on some of the previous year's brood comb. Lemongrass oil contains all but one molecule that is in the pheromone produced by the Nasanov’s gland that is visible when the bee’s stick their fannies up and fan at the entrance to the hive or trap. This signals and helps the bees to follow the concentration gradient to the entrance of the swam trap.

A day or two after setting the trap I observed a swarm crossing one of my access roads headed for the trap. I grabbed my camera and tripod a set it up to observe the event. I only posted about 15 minutes of the event which lasted about 40 minutes.
