Keeping Populations Of Livestock Thoughts on Sustainable Homesteading and Heritage Livestock Breeds
Todays video is another bit of thought, this time on keeping populations of livestock on a homestead and how that can factor into sustainable homesteading. Really "homesteading" in a way is building a relationship with the other organisms that you grow to help sustain yourself (i.e. food etc.) and looking at it this way can certainly change your perspective on things.
Thanks so much for watching!

It's time to get harvesting our garlic scape. Garlic is a great crop to grow on the homestead and it produces not one but two very useful products. Everyone is familiar with the garlic bulbs which will be harvested later in the season but you also get a great harvest of garlic scapes which can be used in a variety of ways. In this video, we will go over when, why and how to harvest garlic scapes on a homestead scale.
And don't forget to check out our video on 5 ways to use garlic scapes: https://youtu.be/4EFp_vKCMJw

Its time for a summer garden tour. The garden has gone a bit on the back burner this year however we have managed to do a fairly good job of getting things planted and tended in the garden despite some of our setbacks with other aspects of the homestead. So as the gardens begin to start really get going we are going to try and keep up with some regular garden tours to show what's going on and how things look!

Making some choices on our Canadian Homestead.
Today we are talking about some deep discussions looking at multiple choices and making some big decisions about the future of our homestead in relation to what we need, what we would like and how to keep it all going and therefore be somewhat sustainable in what we are doing while still balancing the finances on the homestead!
Thanks so much for watching!

And so it begins the cucumber beetles infestation has arrived. Chris is at war today in the garden, as everyone knows how important squash are on our Canadian homestead. Something is eating the squash plants and that something is cucumber beetles and we are going into full natural defense mode to keep these squash plants alive and producing. Fortunately we may have found some solutions or at least some help with this problem in another part of the garden with another garden stable our garlic and dill plants.
Thanks so much for watching!

Episode 183
Cooper's Hawk Visits the Feeders
During the last snow fall the bird feeders attracted a dinner guest of a different kind. A juvenile Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii). The Cooper's Hawk is an accipiter or bird hawk but they typically have their sights set on smaller birds like songbirds and doves (not poultry). Was an excellent moment as this young hawk sat patiently for some time just outside the window allowing for a good look and chance to film! Anyways just a few moments of some natural activity around the farm. Hawks do fulfill an important role in the ecosystem and while often portrayed as the "bad guy" but having diversity on the farm (including predators) is a sign that the local ecosystem is in decent shape.
Thanks for watching, as we are both naturalists we will be featuring more wildlife and native vegetation from around the farm in the future! If you enjoy this video don't forget to like comment and subscribe!
Thanks
