Yesterday we moved our little Vinny NuNu to his new outdoor run. We won't leave the pool filled because we aren't confident of his balance and abilities yet....but look - look - VINNY CAN RUN!!!!!! He can run!!!!! This is something we were VERY unsure of, and a huge bonus. If this doesn't just make you grin ear to ear, I dunno what could! This is fabulous news.
Unfortunately though, our vet has confirmed that Vinny IS blind in one eye and has some significant nerve damage on that side of his face. At this point, his eyesight is unlikely to come back, and the nerve damage is likely permanent. This is sad ...yes...but all in all, that is a small thing really in the great scheme of what could have been as the result of what happened to him.
And so if he has regained the use of his limbs, and he can walk, and he can eat, and he can still see out of one eye...well, then we will take it and be happy.
I KNOW you all still want to know if he will stay or go back to the wild and I'm still sorry to say that we don't know yet, and that this decision is also not one we can make alone. The DEC would also have to give the ok if he were to stay. So we are not going there yet, and we are going to still revel in his recovery and watch his progress for the next few weeks.
After a few weeks here, we will move him to the natural woods setting enclosure and see how he does there in a more natural habitat. At that point, if we were planning on releasing him, all human interaction would gradually cease and he would start to scavenge for carefully placed food.
