Christmas, Christ's Mass, is the common English name for the feast of the birthday of our Lord.
The Feast of the Nativity is called Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25, though for what reason this date was selected is not known for certain. The Nativity was not observed separately from the Epiphany (January 6) until the fourth century and the octave of the Epiphany is privileged above that of Christmas.
The feast is explained in the proper preface of the Mass: "By the mystery of the word made flesh the light of thy glory hath shone anew upon the eyes of our mind; so that while we acknowledge Him God seen by men, we may be drawn by Him to the love of things unseen."
