This is an excerpt from the final performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” on its original West End run in London. This was during the era of “The New Starlight Express” from 1992 to 2001, wherein changes were made to the songs, the characters and the show as a whole.
One of these changes included cutting the character of C.B the Red Caboose, also known as The Red Caboose or just simply Caboose in other performances, the twist villain of the show. As a result, his songs “There’s Me” and “Wide Smile” weren’t cut, but were modified. “There’s Me” was sung by Dustin the Big Hopper in the 1992 previews before it was reworked into a new song sung by Dinah herself titled “That’s Me” where she laments about her relationship with Greaseball. His part in “Freight” was also rewritten to not mention him at all.
As for “Wide Smile”, it was reworked into a new version of “Terrorising Rusty”, in which Greaseball’s gang of diesel engines beat up Rusty after the third race so he won’t compete in the final race. The melody of the song remains, but the lyrics are completely new.
The footage comes from Starlight Express Media’s upload of the entire final London performance, which while hard to watch sometimes as it’s handheld audience footage, still makes for an interesting look into the history of this musical, as well as looking back in time before we had our phones to record everything on. It’s unknown who filmed the footage though, at least I don’t know myself.
