DENON DRM-44HX - vintage direct drive 3 head cassette deck, dual capstan, closed loop
DENON DRM-44HX, The last goodbye to this great, but broken direct drive vintage 3 head cassette deck! It was the top DENON model at the time, it came with wooden side panels!

It was the time when HxPro came around to help Dolby NR, and this deck emphasize that with huge HxPro logo on its faceplate. But, you wouldn't buy this model because of that, it was direct drive motor and dual capstan that would attract you.
Here we have one simple double recording auto reverse cassette deck by Kenwood. KX-W6050 comes with Dolby B & C with HxPro noise reduction systems and also normal and high speed dubbing option.
It has bright peak level meter with double digital counters, there's no calibration it bias knob, it all goes automatically.
This single cassette deck looks simple, but it's one great mid range cassette deck from Onkyo. TA-R200 is equipped with smart auto reverse (changes sides quickly), and it comes with Dolby B and C Hx Pro noise reduction systems.

It has auto tape selector, 3 digits counter is still mechanical, and there's a old fashion LED with peak level indicator. But, this deck has bias knob, and recording input level for each channel, that's what was important for recording the various types of tapes the best possible way.
SONY TC-W230 is a basic dual (double) cassette deck with Dolby B & C Noise Reduction, DC servo controlled motors with Normal or High speed Synchro Dubbing. It was equipped with liquid crystal peak level meter and simple mechanical counter for right (recording) deck. Transport is mechanical but trusty, the only inconvenience is that you'll have to manually select cassette tape types before playing or recording.

Just a short review of this broken plastic DENON DRM-W660 basic double cassette deck. Yes, is auto reverse and it has Dolby B and C, and even bias knob, but...

Plastic, it's cheap, it has weird yellowish door covers, cosmetic side, bad.
But, on the electronic side, it has all bells and whistles, big LED with peak meters, double controls, CD synchro function, but the sound is...cheap...
Here we have one nice looking dual cassette deck by Kenwood. KX-W8030 has double everything! Starting with recording on both decks with automatic calibration of your tape's bias, Dolby B, C and HxPro noise reduction systems, normal and high speed dubbing...
It's one of the latest Kenwood double cassette decks that looks really good, has some great functions and solid sound quality.

DENON DRM-500 is a solid mid (or lower) range cassette deck player and recorder with some basic functions such as Dolby B and C HxPro, music search and an average sound. Cheapening plastic was normal at the end of cassette decks era, this deck confirms it, it's light and you can feel plasticky buttons, recording level knob is cool.

But, since you can get it cheap on eBay and it's probably easy and cheap to repair, maybe you can use it to transfer your cassette collection into digital age, this one could do the job.
DENON DRS-810 is 3 Head cassette deck with Dolby B & C, HxPro noise reduction and front drawer loading mechanism. Maybe it looks like a CD player, but if you ever look inside, beside 3 heads you'll also find 4 motors, closed loop, dual capstan mechanism. It's stylish, most of the buttons are hidden under the cover, and I like big peak meter with large time counter. Interesting piece of history, not so remarkable 3 head cassette deck if judged only by sound quality.

Short review of Nakamichi's last 3 Head cassette deck, model DR-10. Legend goes that this was "the last" 3-head Nakamichi cassette deck produced. Mine was from Japan, but some of the last batch was Made in Taiwan. Mystery or not, I took a look at this fabulous machine that makes sound coming from it warm and exciting !

But, this deck is not in perfect working condition, it has one problem. Playback is working perfectly fine, but recording is not! While you're recording prerecorded tapes, it will not erase properly previous recording, it'll just "add up" new recording on top of old one!
I guess, it needs more service.. But, for playing tapes, this is great cassette deck!
This was one of the best Pioneer double recording decks at the time, CT-W900R could record on both decks at the same time, and both sides since it's auto-reverse. Next to Dolby B and C and "twin Hx Pro", we also have auto tape selector, nice big LCD with peak meters and sharable counter.

There's not to much to adjust beside recoding lever and balance, but this deck will record most of the tapes almost perfectly, even without bias adjustment. I was surprised with the sound quality on this old vintage cassette deck.
