The Golden quail have been instrumental in making my dreams come true, for a coturnix to raise her own chicks. My understanding is that the Golden quail I have belong to the two main types of 'Golds', which in English are known as the Italian and the Manchurian. However, some breeders insist that these are alternate names for the same golden bird! Whatever your belief, there are nuances due to patterns and markings, so the Italian can be subdivided into the Italian Gold and the Italian Speckled. In French and Spanish these quail are known as the Isabelle/Isobel/Isabela for reasons explained in the film. Equally important, is the vexed question of genetics in the golden colouring of fur and feathers; i.e. the yellow allele, which is lethal when homozygous. Ideas and observations on hatching and raising bobwhite quail organically with a mother hen. A hen who will sit on a golf ball, has no problem with some dubious looking eggs! Goldie is a tenacious broody hen, she has managed to keep going and finally hatched one little bobwhite, Tiger. This film is about his first few days of life and the bond which was forged in the first few hours with his Mother hen, a Ardenner/Frizzle bantam. The eggs had a difficult trip here, most of them were smashed in the mail, due to a 'packaging malfunction' and the rest looked cracked. We had a couple of possible whole eggs but as the days went on I began to have doubts, not Goldie though and as usual the hen was right!
