Happy Halloween! Sweet Home is the Survival Horror RPG by Capcom that arguably started the whole Survival Horror scene! For a job this big, SuperDerek teams up with Jared from Avalanche Reviews! Check out this Sweet Home Review!
Remember way back when I was reviewing Breath of Fire? I said something then that, as it turns out, wasn't entirely true. I said that Breath of Fire was the first RPG developed by Capcom. Sure, Capcom recognizes Breath of Fire as their first traditional RPG, but Capcom is hiding a little secret. Long ago, Capcom made an RPG so gruesome, so grotesque, and so VILE, that not even Nintendo of America could censor it enough to pass guidelines. A game that was never meant to see the light of day in the west. A game that you could argue, was born dead.
If you’re new to turn based RPGs, there’s a lot of noise to sort through. And you want to make sure you start off on the right foot. It’s easy to fall into the trap of jumping into games you hear are incredible but end up biting off more than you can chew, or on the other end of the spectrum, try RPGs made for beginners that just downright suck! So, in my ongoing efforts to share my love for the RPG genre, lower barriers to entry, and banish the gatekeepers, I have been curating a list to help you on your way! Because if there’s two things that I’m good at, it’s coming up with concise titles, and coming up with lists, and these are 10 beginner-friendly Japanese style turn-based role-playing games interspersed with five that you should avoid either because they suck or they’re good but bad for newcomers!

Thank you NISA for the review code! Nayuta no Kiseki, or The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a gaiden to the Kiseki series you can enjoy right now. And I think you should! In this Nayuta Review, I talk about how the game to me feels like a more modern "Brave Fencer Musashi" style Action RPG, the kind you you could play for hours, or pick up and put down easily!

JRPG Weekly Update Show Notes:
Headline:
• Final Fantasy VII Remake is a Timed Exclusive
o Leading up to The Game Awards, Square Enix updated the already somewhat controversial cover-art we talked about a few weeks ago, which doesn’t properly signify that it’s just the first episode of FFVII
o This new update adds more clarifying information to the cover, but this time the clarification is that the game is a timed exclusive until March 2021, meaning the game is likely coming to Xbox One and PC after the exclusivity expires.
o Final bit of FFVII news, at The Game Awards, Square Enix revealed a new trailer for the game focusing on the protagonist, Cloud Strife.
• With the official release of the Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind trailer we got some extra details, including a price-point of $30
o This sounds pretty steep as a gut reaction, but we’ve paid similar prices for large expansions before, such as Xenoblade Chronicles II: Tourna the Golden Country
o Hopefully this hints at the update being quite expansive, but for now my hot take is: Wait and See.
New Game & Port Announcements
• Bravely Default II Announced for 2020 at The Game Awards
o The game is coming to Nintendo Switch
o I truly hope that before this comes out, Bravely Default & Second get a Switch port, a dual pack would be really nice.
o I really have no idea what to make of the title, considering Bravely Second was already a direct sequel. This is needlessly confusing.
o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlpM8MO3Ml0
• Finally got some information on Babylon’s Fall during Sony’s State of Play
o Announced at E3 2 years ago, we finally got a trailer showing gameplay
o Babylon’s Fall appears to be an Action RPG by Square Enix and Platinum Games, similar to Nier and Nier Automata.
o The game features a painterly aesthetic.
o The game is expected on PS4 and PC, but a date has not been announced.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veow_lvRhfw
• During Nintendo’s Indie Showcase we got a few indie games announced that look interesting:
o Golf Story is getting a sequel called Sports Story
Launching second quarter 2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzzcgCi20Z8
• SuperSmash appears to allow players to combine genres I guess? I’m curious to see how that works in action.
o Launching in May of 2020
http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/Supermash/
• Boyfriend Dungeon is a dungeon crawler and dating sim where your weapons transform into boys for you to do boyfriend things with. Expect to see that coming in 2020
• Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance announced for PC, and consoles
o Expected to launch in Fall of 2020
o The trailer honestly sucks, I think. The Videography made me feel a little nauseous and so did the music. But a new DnD game is always a good thing.
• Ys: Memories of Celceta, originally on PlayStation Vita and PC was announced for PS4.
o The new version will have dual audio options, and the PC version is getting the dual audio feature via free DLC update.
o The game will be $30 for a digital copy, and $40 for a physical release
o The port is coming in Spring of 2020.
Release Date & Localization Updates:
• Trails of Cold Steel 3 for Switch release date updated
o Port is releasing on March 19th in Japan
• Square Enix via twitter announced that
o Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles HD Remaster
Delayed until Summer of 2020
• Trails of Mana received an updated trailer at the Video Game Awards with more planned to come over the coming months
o Trials of Mana is expected to launch on April 24th 2020
• Marvelous and Edelweiss have announced Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin,
o an Action Adventure Farming RPG has been delayed into 2020

Community News
• Fans of The Legend of Dragoon have started a petition on LegendOfDragoon.org and have Legend of Dragoon remade for PlayStation 5 and have gathered nearly 14,000 signatures of their 15,000-signature goal. I suspect we might be able to push them over the edge to that 15,000-signature mark!

JRPG Weekly Update Show Notes:
Headlines:
• Final Fantasy VII Remake is Controversial. Surprise!
New Games, Port and Localization Announcements
• Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV Announced for North America!
o Excellent news, worst day to reveal it. Announced on April 1st, causing healthy fan skepticism.
o Expect to see the game releasing on PS4 this Fall,
eventually coming to Switch & PC in 2021
• A new Paper Mario game may be coming to Switch
o Several outlets have been reporting on rumors surrounding several Mario games getting remastered for Super Mario Bros 35th anniversary,
o Apparently a new Paper Mario game is among the included titles in the works.
o Keep in mind, nothing has been confirmed yet, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.
• Megadimension Neptunia VII coming to Nintendo Switch eShop in the West.
o The game was originally launched on PC and PS4 worldwide in 2016.
o Looks like the game will be digital only for those who may be interested.
o Expect to see it this summer. Price and date are to be announced.
• Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is getting a remake. This time the game will be called Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, in accord with the rebranding of the original series.
o The remake is coming to Nintendo Switch, expect to see it this sumer!
• Mortal Shell announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC
o The game appears to be a Souls-like Action RPG made by a small indie studio, Cold Symmetry. And from what I can see it looks pretty awesome!
Release Date Updates:
• The Outer Worlds for Switch got a release date updated
o Originally planned to launch on March 6th
o The Outer Worlds for Switch was delayed indefinitely due to pandemic issues.
o Now launching tentatively on June 5th 2020
• Wasteland 3 delayed
o Originally set for May 19th, the launch has been pushed back to August 28th, citing complications of the pandemic and the transition to working-from-home.
Other News
• Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release date was pushed up from April 10th for several countries
o This is likely why you’ve started seeing lots of information about the game long before you’ve been able to get your hands on a copy. And so far, there hasn’t been much of a consensus. Things are controversial. Who would have guessed?
o Well, what I request of you all is if you have played the game, please don’t spoil anything for everyone else. But if you have impressions to provide, let us know down in the comments how you feel about the game so far.
o Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to launch officially on the 10th.
• Indivisible got a few new features in its latest update
o The new additions in the free update include a New Game+ mode and 4-player couch Co-Op.
• NieR Replicant housekeeping:
o Last week I mentioned that NieR Replicant was getting a remake. I however didn’t do a great job of explaining that this is not to be confused with the Xbox 360 release of NieR Gestalt.
o NieR Replicant was originally launched on PS3 in Japan, and we never got that version in the West. This version of the game features a different, younger protagonist. However the rest of the game is said to be the same.
o
SuperDerek News:
• Last week I released an extra discussion video talking about Terranigma and Trials of Mana, and which of the two I think represents the best Action RPG on the Super Nintendo. If you haven’t played one of both, you owe it to yourself to check them out! I have spoiler-free reviews of both to help you decide where to start.
• Friday evening at 5pm Central, a good friend of mine, Wood, is holding a charity fund-raising stream to help feed families who have been affected by the current pandemic situation. I’ll link to his channel down below. If you feel like you’d like to help contribute to the fundraiser for Feeding America, please follow his channels and hang out. It should be a great time!

Currently I use a Super UFO Pro 8 to play my original Super Famicom games in English using Original Super Nintendo hardware.
