Shanon Brooks on Monticello College | The Good and Basic podcast special episode
In which JB interviews Dr. Shanon Brooks about the founding of Monticello College and its philosophical foundation. Dr. Brooks co-founded George Wythe College previous to his involvement with Monticello College and has decades of experience in teaching, inspiring, and mentoring the next generations.
In which we look through the various perspectives of last week's videos to try to answer the question of what makes good or bad technology. This week's discussion is a little like punching a giant marshmallow again and again...it's not clear how much progress you're making, but isn't it kind of fun anyway?

I (JB) have some questions about climate change. First off, which climate change? I think there are 4 main levels of discussion when discussing the topic: how is the climate changing, why is the climate changing (are humans responsible), what will be the consequences of climate change (doom, mega doom, mostly ok, ok but hugely expensive?), and what should we do to respond to climate change? My questions center on level 3.

In which JB talks about the cost of this spoon, and whether lawyers who like to play in the workshop are crazy.
I (JB) remember a lecture I attended in law school where the highly successful attorney giving the lecture commented that he had a woodshop at home and enjoyed making cabinets. After the lecture, I talked with him about this hobby and how he negotiated his work/life balance. It was so interesting to me that despite the opportunity cost, this highly successful attorney who worked long hours in highly engaging cases had an unmet need for a special kind of hands-on work which he fulfilled in making things himself.

This is part 7.2 of what I hope will be a series of long-form discussions of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. To quote the author: "Now that we do have some time, and know it, I would like to use the time to talk in depth about things that seem important." This video discusses Phaedrus' experience teaching rhetoric and how it begin his investigation into Quality.
