This tough and well made three-way power adapter works well and gets the job done although there are cheaper rivals out there.
In the attractive but simple product box are the plug adapter itself and a small and rather hard to read information sheet and user guide. Build quality is first rate. The adapter feels tough, robust and built to last and feels a cut above the budget no-name rivals available from the bargain bin stores. The unusual short cable design allows the plugboard to be positioned where a normal adapter could not fit but without the inconvenience of a long trailing cable.
The adapter has a standard 13A UK power in plug with a very short heavy duty cable leading to the plugboard itself. On the front of the plugboard are the three 13A sockets widely spaced enough to allow non standard plugs to be fitted with above them a tiny status LED and a large proper clicky button to turn the sockets off and on. The sockets can only be controlled together and not separately. On the top of the device can be found three smart sensing USB A charging ports rated at 3.1A in total with a maximum output of 2.4A per port.
That is all there is to it. The plug adapter is tough and well made and a cut above most rivals in that respect. There are many cheaper rivals out there if you feel the £22.49 is too much but if you would prefer to pay more for quality then this would be a decent buy.

LED light strips have advanced a good deal over the years and this new double-length set 10M kit from Elegant Life is one of the best configured, most versatile, and easiest to use I have tried yet. It contains all you need to get going and allows for room for expansion later. This latest generation kit is a marked step upwards from the older ones and i is better made and easier to fit and at £26.99 matches them on price.
In the attractive and capacious product box are the usual components: two self Adhesive 5050 5m Light strip, a UK Power supply, remote control, and a User Guide. The User Guide is indicative of just how far these kits have developed as it is well written, nicely printed and easy to read. I include a scan of it in my unboxing video.
All you need is included here. There is no need to buy anything more unless you plan to expand the unit with more LED strips which can be daisy-chained onto this one and powered from the same PSU.
Fitting could not be easier. Carefully cut the LED strip to the lengths you want at the marked points, peel off the backing from the LED strip and push in place. Connect the plugs on the strip ends to the plugs attached to the power supply, plugin and there you go.
The fitted LED strips if discreetly mounted can be left in place for future festive occasions, otherwise, they can be carefully removed and returned to the box ready for future use. As with all LED strips over time the sticky surface will come loose and so for a long time use a more permanent clip mounting method should be used and some clips are included with this kit.
The strips can be operated using the supplied credit card sized remote control but it is easier and more fun to do so using the Smart Life app. Follow the instructions in the app to add a new device, select the device type from the screen and set the strip into setup mode by plugging and unplugging it three times in quick succession. It will start flashing to confirm it is in setup mode. Again, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process, which is quick and easy. Continue to follow the screen instructions to connect it to Amazon Alexa or Google Home to get full voice control.
Once set up and running you can select a range of colours and lighting modes as well as integrate lighting into schedules, timers and chained event routines.
The user-friendliness and build quality of this kit make it better than most and well worth the price and it is simple to integrate into your connected home.

OYU Clip On Desk Lamp
More Info and Purchase: tinyurl.com/2oasybso
Blog: https://marcoscucom.wordpress.com/2022/07/17/oyu-clip-on-desk-lamp/
Priced at £29.97 this is not the cheapest clip-on lamp out there but it offers a focused light with a narrower light spread than from any other I have tried and this together with a near to premium build quality makes it worth the difference.
The lamp arrived simply packaged in a rather low-end branded cardboard cox containing the lamp, detachable UK three-pin power supply and a large, easy to read but rather unnecessary user guide.
The lamp consists of a padded metal crocodile clamp with a maximum spread of 10.9 cm with above it the fully rotating 40cm metal gooseneck with above that the 7 cm light head. Unlike the many rivals, this one does not have a flat light panel but instead a smaller and more focused torch-like head. This means the light from this unit is much less diffused and can be targeted at a specific area on your desk or work surface. This means. for example, you can use it as a bedroom reading light without disturbing your partner or work at your desk without annoying others viewing the TV in the same room.
The light has two controls. One is an in-line master power switch, the other a touch control on the base of the gooseneck used to select one of three brightness levels and to turn the main light off leaving the subtle red quick-find LED still on. The LED is very handy to locate the touch switch at night. Turning the in-line switch on powers the lamp and turns the quick find LED on without a switch on the main light, a clever design feature.
The light output at a maximum of 650LM is surprisingly bright but can be dimmed down and this together with the warm white light makes it perfect for bedtime use or studying.
The lamp is well made from steel and aluminium alloy, is cleverly designed and if you need a work or reading light you can use without disturbing others this would be a great buy.

ESDDI Travel Tripod TP-30

More Info and Purchase: https://tinyurl.com/ygs7r5ts
Blog: https://marcoscucom.wordpress.com/2021/05/24/esddi-travel-tripod-tp-30/
The main things to look for in a travel tripod are compact size, low weight and decent build quality and for £26.66 the ESDDI TP-30 delivers the goods. However, this is a travel tripod first and foremost and is not made for nor suited to studio work and with anything other than a lightweight camera or phone.
In the box are the tripod, soft carry case, quick release plate, Phone mount and a well written and easy to read User Guide. Everything seems well made and as robust as can be expected for the price and lightweight aluminium/plastic design with nothing looking likely to fail anytime soon. The legs of the tripod are made from lightweight aluminium alloy, which makes it great for travel use. With a more expensive studio tripod, including those higher up the ESDDI range, I would expect to see metal used throughout and in a heavier gauge, but this is a budget tripod designed for travel use and the lightweight build here makes more sense.
The tripod is easy and very quick to set up, a boon when on location, and the non-detachable video head makes it particularly suited for that use. The inclusion of the phone mount also makes clear the intended market. The tripod is lightweight and I would say this tripod is best suited for nothing larger than a DSLR with standard to medium size lenses. I was pleased to see quick release leg extension clips, not only are they easier to use than rotating clips but also you can see at a glance that the legs are locked. Beware that the top central extension below the head is liable to descend rapidly if the lock is released before locking it in place. The quick-release plate is good too as it clips in place from the side, which I prefer to the older front/rear slide system and the head also incorporates a rather basic but still handy spirit level. The tripod extends up to a full 140 cm, (55 inches) although delicate handling is needed at this height to avoid vibrations.
In general, I am very happy with the tripod as it is quick and easy to use, offers good stability, is well made and thoughtfully designed. This is an excellent lightweight travel tripod, suitable for amateur or some professional use and at just can only be looked on as a bargain indeed at the price.

I have been looking forward to receiving this watch very much after I tested and was impressed by the x-wrist tracker a few weeks ago. Have they been able to match the innovative hardware of the tracker but improve the few design and software glitches that beset it? The answer is yes and yes - sort of.
The watch has the look and premium feel of a high end device which belies the £149 price. It has hardware and features I have never seen before on any watch although in a few areas it could be better. Build quality is first rate and this watch does have a premium feel to it.
The 1.3" 240 x 240 pixel watch display is bright, clear, and unlike with the tracker is well designed and easy to read, although there is no always-on option and, indeed, no way of changing the default auto screen off time of around 5 seconds. It comes with a small number of displays built-in and swapping these over is quick and easy.
This is a health and not a sports orientated smartwatch - there is no GPS, not even connected GPS, and activity tracking is limited and not yet fully implemented. Activities can be started directly from the watch but not yet from the app, although there is a page which is supposed to do that. The range of activities available is limited and does not include walking, although badminton, curiously, is supported..
That said, the health monitoring features are unmatched - Heart Rate, Respiration, Blood Oxygen, Steps, distance, sleep, calories, food intake, and general fitness. These all work well but the sleep analysis is rather basic but gives you all the information most people will want. The various health parameters are monitored automatically every few minutes in the background but on demand readings can also be taken directly from the watch. Each section has a separate screen on the watch which shows a graph of recent readings, stay on the page and a spot reading will be taken and displayed. ECG readings can also be taken on demand.
The main innovation of this health watch is in Blood Pressure tracking. It does this in two ways, directly through the LEDs on the underside of the watch. but also with a small rubber cuff that physically connects to the watch and inflates to take the reading. It takes a while to get used to the cuff but once set up and working it gives the most accurate blood pressure readings I have ever had from a watch. The user can select which method to use for on-demand readings directly from the watch. It is advised to calibrate the watch using an external blood pressure monitor about once a month to obtain the most accurate readings and this can be done through the app settings.
The watch features all the usual messaging, phone and app notifications and interactions - although you cannot reply to messages from the watch. You can also control your phone's camera and music controls from the watch but I found these did not work on my Xiaomi phone.
The x-wrist app has been improved slightly, I think since I tried it with the tracker. As before the connection between the watch and phone is automatic, stable and fast and can also be initiated manually from the app. The app is very comprehensive, perhaps overly so, and can be confusing to use with some features repeated and others not working. A feature of the x-wrist ecosystem, and this takes up a large amount of the app, is the system of rewards and incentives which allows users to purchase training, health advice and other goodies through exercise and health management.
This watch has the look and feel of a premium device with a health monitoring feature set better than on any watch I have tried yet. The watch, one of three new watches launched by this new UK company, is a big advance on the tracker both in functionality and usability. The x-wrist app still needs some work doing on it as does the watch and both feel like they are in beta development. When this is sorted out x-wrist will have a first rate smartwatch with features unmatched for twice the price.

AliExpress Smart Spotlight Security Camera Review
More Info and Purchase: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005482344059.html
Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/marcoscu6
Blog: https://marcoscucom.wordpress.com/2024/01/18/aliexpress-smart-spotlight-security-camera/
I have bought a few items from Aliexpress in China and with mixed success. This camera, with the Tuya brand name, for which I paid around £35, is widely available from multiple sellers within Aliexpress and looks very similar to the much more expensive Reolink Argus 3 camera I wanted to replace with it.
It is a rechargeable 1080p external wifi security camera with a spotlight and motion detector. The appeal to me, aside from the price, was that it is controlled through the Smart Life app and can be linked to Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
In the box you get the camera, a dual purpose mount, a mounting kit, USB-C charging cable and a well written user guide. I have to say that the build quality all looked equal to the Reolink and it was quick and easy to pair with the Smart Life app and then to Alexa.
Looking at the camera, on thr front is the camera lens, infrared night light, Spotlight, i/r sensor, power status LED, WiFi status LED, and the motion detector PIR sensor. On the back is a metal tripod mount and the speaker grill, on the base is a second tripod m,ount, together with a gromett protected flap concealing the SD card slot, USB-C charging port, a camera reset switch, an On/Off switch, and a blank SIM card slot.
The camera gives excellent results too with sharp and clear 1080p video and two way audio. I have also tested it with an external solar panel (also from AliExpress) and it seems to work well with it. That said, the video does look rather better inside the app than when downloaded. The video size from the card was 2304x1296, 15fps. It has the option for colour or infrared night vision, scheduled or 24/7 video with motion detection (with human discrimination), along with a good bright spotlight and a 100db siren.
It can be powered either using the battery charged about once every two weeks or so or with a solar panel. I bought a cheap solar panel from AliExpress to use with it and this seems to be working OK even during the short winter days.
Now the bad news. After a few days suddenly and for no reason the motion detection stopped working. I have reset the camera, removed and added it again to the system and confirmed the correct settings in the app but motion detection no longer works by day or by night. The camera will work for manual recordings and when in 247 recording mode but that is all. Also, like many cameras of this design (and there are many) it is very prone to raindrops getting onto the lens and distorting the picture.
That's the way with AliExpress, you win some and you lose some. Had I bought it from Amazon I would have sent it back, but I am sceptical about my chances of getting a refund from the AliExpress seller. I will probably just keep it in use as a general security camera in 247 mode.

Who knows how long TV boxes such as this will be available for as a test prosecution is currently underway against a market seller for facilitating copyright violations. It may mean that KODI boxes or at least pre configured versions will no longer be available and that prices, currently in free fall, will go back up again.
Inside the box was the device itself, a UK power adaptor with 1.5m cable, medium sized remote control, HDMI cable, and a User Guide. Don’t expect the User Guide to tell you much about how to operate the KODI or other installed software as it basically shows you just how to connect the device to the internet and configure the TV screen. I enclose a scanned copy of the Guide on the end of my unboxing video. Switch to full screen and pause to read it.
Like most TV boxes, it is essentially an Android phone without the mobile phone capabilities and optimised for use with an HDMI TV as a media player for local and internet files. The core of this and similar devices is the remarkable Kodi application and currently this box has the most recent version installed.
A good range of ports are available for playing local files and additional equipment. It features four USB, HDMI, Ethernet, power in, SPDIF, AV and an SD card slot. The included remote control is well made and is unlike the generic ones usually bundled with TV Boxes this one was clearly designed for use with this box.. It has the snappy Amlogic S905 Quad Core chipset, which is perfectly powerful enough for a TV box. This box runs Android 5.1 which is a relatively new version of the operating system. Many budget boxes still run Android 4.4 although most run Android 5.1 and increasingly Android 6.
The only real setting up task is to connect to your home network and it has both wifi and Ethernet options available to do this. If you are familiar with Android then this is very simple, non Android users may find this more difficult. Once on the network to get the best from this device you should login to your Google account, that way apps can be easily installed via your computer from the Google Play website, Gmail and YouTube will be auto configured at the same time..
Thanks to the USB ports third party memory sticks, keyboards and mice can be used to make navigating the User Interface faster and easier, although the built in pop-up keyboard and remote control will suffice. The supplied handset is fine but some users may wish to invest in a USB dongle wireless keypad to give the full range of keys and a built in mini touchpad. This can also be done over Bluetooth but I find that a dedicated dongle/keypad works best.
This is a reasonably well specified entry level Android TV box. It comes with 1GB of RAM , the usual size ,and the almost standard 8GB of storage. The box has standard speed Ethernet and 2.4Ghz wifi but misses out on the faster and less crowded 5Ghz band and high speed Gigabit LAN. That said, I must also say that in use I have found very little difference between any TV boxes once KODI is installed and running.
This one works very well, has an attractive and well laid out on screen interface and an easy to navigate menu system. It seems stable and reliable in use. As with all TV Boxes experienced users may prefer to reset and update KODI and install their own preferred options and plugins.
I don't really look on this device as a rival to easy access user friendly streamers like the Roku or the Amazon Fire TV as this device offers so much more but at the price of being difficult to fully configure as well as being more clunky and long winded to operate. The Kodi app uses plug-in type configurations which are volatile in nature and tend to cease working without notice and need to be replaced or updated, A search on Youtube will find a host of guides to getting the best from KODI.
This is a decent quality entry level TV streamer but as with all Android TVs there is a learning curve to get the best from it. Priced at just £27.59 this is certainly a budget priced device but with enough higher end features to make it a worthwhile buy.

Tuya Smart Temperature Humidity Sensor TH05 Review

Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/marcoscu6
Blog: https://marcoscucom.wordpress.com/2024/01/07/aliexpress-smart-temperature-humidity-sensor/
I have been buying quite a few items recently from AliExpress in China, some are bargains, some are junk and others are in between. This is one of the good ones.
Firstly, let me say that this device is widely available on AliExpress from many sellers and at a range of prices. I paid £6.18, which is the lowest priced version I found at the time and it took about two weeks to be delivered to me in the UK with free shipping from China. Tuya makes several other humidity sensors, some round and some square, some battery powered, some USB powered.
In the box, you receive the sensor/display itself, a detachable kickstand mount, and a well written and nicely printed user guide. Build quality is lightweight but seems of good quality with nothing looking likely to fail or fall off anytime soon.
Powered by three AAA batteries, the sensor displays the time, date, temperature and humidity as well as battery and Wifi status on the kickstand supported desktop display. On top of the unit is the only control button, used to turn the backlighting on, which then turns off after a few seconds. It also connects to the Smart Life or Tuya apps to show this information on your phone with a graphical display of the data over time. The Smart Life app, which is the one I mainly use, can be configured to send alerts for low or high temperatures and humidity. The apps also connect with Google and Amazon Alexa. The app connected sensor can be integrated into timers and routines controlled through the apps. I have set up a routine to power on the dehumidifier when the humidity reaches a certain level and to power off when it returns to normal.
I found that it works well and I have had no issues with it so far and after several weeks of use, the battery is still showing as 100%. Usually, at this point I would mention some of the issues with it , but apart from the display being a bit dim when the backlighting is off there is nothing really other than the lack of a proximity sensor for the backlighting, which many will view as a positive advantage.
The main selling points are the remarkably low price and the integration with the Alexa and Smart Home ecosystems and so far I have found this to work perfectly on all three of the sensors I bought.
For the low price, I think it is a pretty decent buy

OYIB Bluetooth 5. 3 Wireless Earbuds

More Info and Purchase: tinyurl.com/26v9slvw
Blog: https://marcoscucom.wordpress.com/2022/07/24/oyib-bluetooth-5-3-wireless-earbuds/
Featuring the latest Bluetooth 5.3 technology, USB-C charging as well as no less than 4 microphones this has to be one of the most technically advanced true wireless headsets I have tried yet. But is iot any good?
I am not usually a fan of the AirPod style stem design but it usually does make for superior sound quality as well as a more secure fitting and this is the case here too. This new headset is compact in size, both the buds and case, with a glossy black finish that is otherwise similar in design to the many rivals out there.
There was a time when you had to pay plenty to get decent quality True Wireless Earbuds but the introduction of Bluetooth 5.0 seems to have changed all that. Before Bluetooth 5.0 all but the most expensive TW earbuds would continually drop out, crackle, pop and generally prove more trouble than they were worth. As technology develops each headset is better than the last and this new set which features the latest Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity and USB-C charging has some of the hardware on board.
In the box were the two buds together with a short USB charging cable, a compact sized glossy black charging case, and a well written and easy to read User Guide. Despite the light weight, everything has a quality feel to it but without the weightiness of some rivals.
First time pairing could not be simpler and took just a few seconds. Simply remove the two buds from the case and pair in the usual way to your phone looking for the label MD058A. Subsequently, taking the buds from the case powers them on, they connect to each other and to the phone automatically, returning them to the case turns them off and begins charging. The Lithium-ion case battery can recharge the buds around 4 times, giving a total of around 25 hours of music. There are displays on both the buds and case bud to show charging and connection status with the buds will charge automatically when placed into the case. These stem format buds are easy to remove from the magnetic case and holding the stem prevents accidental button presses, for me a major selling point.
The earbuds use the latest Bluetooth 5.3 technology which is supported by the latest high-end smartphones but of course, they will also work with older Bluetooth devices. Bluetooth 5 adds a longer range of up to 15m and greatly improves both the stability of the wireless connection and battery life.
The buds are small, neat and comfortable to wear and will deliver up to 5 hours of music per charge. Sound quality is excellent for a TW headset with a very decent level of bass together with clean mid-tones and a sibilance free high end. Calls were clear to hear and easy to make. I found call quality to be fine at each end of the conversation with no dropouts or excessive background noise. Sound quality is enhanced further for calls by the use of twin microphones in each bud.
Each bud has a single soft touch button on it which can be used to end/reject calls, play/pause music, navigate tracks, alter volume and invoke your phone’s voice assistant. This works well and is easy to use. No formal water resistance rating is given but we are told should be fine in the rain but not for swimming.
Charging is good and fast with a full charge for the buds taking just one hour with the same needed to fully charge the case. The case LED display shows the current battery status of both the case and individual buds.
At just £24.99, they are incredibly well priced for the technology available, indeed this headset compares very well with the high-end rivals I have tried as regards sound quality and features. You would need to go a long way to find a better True Wireless Headset for twice the price.
