A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Nobel Laureate, Barry Barish, for UCTV. Barry is an experimental physicist and a professor at UC Riverside. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.
In our interview, Barry reflects on his life in science, being curious, experiencing imposter syndrome, and working in the field of physics. Tune in!
Intro (00:00) How to get over impostor syndrome (00:25) Exploring curiosity (06:20) The art of science (10:54) The probability of a quantum theory of gravity (20:44) Would Barry visit a black hole? (25:19) Barry’s origin story (30:00) Could we make an AI physicist? (41:26) Outro (45:19)

#Consciousness #TheMatrix #SimulationHypothesis
David Chalmers is an Australian philosopher and cognitive scientist specializing in the areas of philosophy of mind and philosophy of language. He is a Professor of Philosophy and Neural Science at New York University, as well as co-director of NYU's Center for Mind, Brain and Consciousness (along with Ned Block).
In 2006, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. In 2013, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. David Chalmers first formulated the “The Hard Problem of Consciousness” in his paper Facing up to the problem of consciousness (1995) and expanded upon it in his book The Conscious Mind (1996). His works have proven to be provocative. Some, such as
Steven Pinker, have praised Chalmers for his argumentative rigor and "impeccable clarity." Others, such as Daniel Dennett and Patricia Churchland, believe that hard problem is really more of a collection of easy problems, and will be solved through further analysis of the brain and behavior.
Reality+: Virtual Worlds and the Problems of Philosophy https://amzn.to/3oqp0Cz
Virtual reality is genuine reality; that’s the central thesis of Reality+. In a highly original work of “technophilosophy,” David J. Chalmers gives a compelling analysis of our technological future. He argues that virtual worlds are not second-class worlds, and that we can live a meaningful life in virtual reality. We may even be in a virtual world already.
Along the way, Chalmers conducts a grand tour of big ideas in philosophy and science. He uses virtual reality technology to offer a new perspective on long-established philosophical questions. How do we know that there’s an external world? Is there a Glod? What is the nature of reality? What’s the relation between mind and body? How can we lead a good life? All of these questions are illuminated or transformed by Chalmers’ mind-bending analysis.

#SecularRituals #CarlSagan #AnnDruyan
Sasha Sagan’s stirring debut book, “For Small Creatures Such As We: Rituals for Finding Meaning in Our Unlikely World,” is the topic of this week’s episode of INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE. Sagan is the daughter of late astronomer/author Carl Sagan and writer/producer Ann Druyan. Watch my interview with Ann Druyan here: https://youtu.be/cXHw-5RLMTU?sub_confirmation=1
? Show notes and resources are available here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php
? Highlights:
00:00:00 Introduction
00:10:02 The power of secular rituals versus relying on habits and willpower.
00:23:48 Rituals span the distinction between belief through evidence, faith, and philosophy.
00:27:01 Poetry for Physicists: Brian Keating reads poems by Walt Whitman and RIchard Feynman
00:34:42 Academic rituals and how to share wonder through education.
00:44:34 Generational learning and how we’re influenced by family.
00:56:45 Would Carl Sagan have given up the search for extraterrestrial life by now?
01:01:46 Questions INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE asks of all authors.
On this Mother’s Day episode, Sagan discusses her own upbringing and how becoming a mother inspired her to research rituals from around the world and throughout history. Her interview with Dr. Brian Keating also touches on her secular upbringing and the intersection of science and religion.
Sasha Sagan studied literature at NYU and has worked as a producer, filmmaker, and editor. Her essays, many about the lessons she learned from her parents, have been published in literary magazines.
