Weekend maintenance has closed track #1 at the BWI Airport Rail Station forcing the northbound Palmetto Train 90 to take its time lining up the two pairs of doors that will open at the station. Unlike the narrow platform bridges used by commuter railroads in the New York city region, Amtrak uses converted gondola cars to create a larget stop target. Despite this the train takes a bit longer than expected and I have a feeling that late night Saturday round trips might not draw the most senior/experianced engineers. Amtrak Veterans ACS-86 #642 is leading the consist of mostly Amfleet 2 long distance cars.

Back in 2004 Amtrak ran two daily round trips on the PRR Main Line and on weekends it was possible to either take a same day round trip over the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown and back OR you could get off in Altoona and spend a few hours railfanning. Well I choose the later and thanks to the connections of m traveling companion I got an invite up into the historic and still operational ALTO tower.
Here is Part 2 of my present day re-edit of the photos I took back in 2004. Watch as I edit and save the photos at modern resolutions and also talk about the history and tech behind what appears in them. Also appearing are some photos from the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.
