As ominous dark thunder clouds blanket the sky, Bowser descends and once again abducts Princess Peach and retires with her to his castle, but Mario follows close behind and duels Bowser; successfully defeating him, but during their battle, a giant living sword falls from the sky, splitting the wish granting Star Road, and crashes into Bowser's castle. The cataclysm scatters Peach, Mario and Bowser to different corners of the world along with the seven-star fragments. Mario returns to Bowser's castle, but the bridge lies in ruins and complicates his entry, so Mario instead makes his way to the Mushroom Kingdom, where he encounters Mallow who hails from Tadpole Pond. Mallow informs him that he was assailed by the local thief, Croco and had a precious coin given to him from his grandfather stolen.
