"Ngai Yuen (藝園)" was a farm, located in Castle Peak Road (Kwu Tung section), Sheung Shui (上水), New Territories (新界), while we drove from Tai Po (大埔), just pass "Tung Ying Hok Pok (東英學圃)", it had 8 sceneries:
(1) 雲山屏障 (fog mountain);
(2) 碧巷觀魚 (fish pond in forest);
(3) 平林放犢 (calves in lawn);
(4) 小雨採蔬 (vegetable in drizzle);
(5) 霜林醉曉 (forest in dawn);
(6) 曲徑樵歸 (paths);
(7) 方塘印月 (moon on square pond);
(8) 竹陰留客 (bamboo grove).
"Ngai Yuen (藝園)" had 7 hectares in area, equal to 7 standard football fields! The eastern pond with a lot of geese and ducks, and planted banana and lychee, however, Hong Kong has too many destructive insects, those fruits qualities was still poor than Tung Koon county, Kwangtung province. The southern was melon and vegetable planting area, such as Chinese cabbage, turnip, carrot, asparagus, napa cabbage, pea, cabbage, tomato, potato, ginger, pumpkin, hairy melon, muskmelon, winter melon, cucumber, watermelon, rice, corn, pineapple, papaya, annually produced over 1,000 piculs (100,000 catties or 60,479 kg)! Hong Kong had a few factories in 1930s, agricultural land were often seawater intrusion, not suitable for rice, but melon and vegetable could fulfilled the need. "Ngai Yuen (藝園)"'s boss was coming from U.S.A., he used American seeds too. Ngai Yuen had a watch tower, its couplet was "土銃一枝可能止盜, 金剛百鍊誰敢攫鋒?" (a gun can prevent robbing, who dare to invade?)
Ngai Yuen had a few huts and an octagonal pavilion with a banner as "游藝小休憩" (rest place for tourist), its couplet was "披雲戴雨鋤荒徑; 悟道觀經識太空." (work hard to build up a wildland; study Taoism.) planted so many flowers, such as Tonkin jasmine, rose, yellow chrysanthemum, magnolia, laurel, french hydrangea, pomegranate tree, longan tree, 2 cypresses, a few finger citron flowers. A reading room with banner as "隨所住處恆安樂", and couplet: "解甲耕田化干戈而為農器, 築亭學佛空色相以究禪機." (a retired soldier changed to be a farmer, built a pavilion for studying Buddhism.) Ngai Yuen had a straw depot, its neighbors already used Dutch windmills for irrigation, but Ngai Yuen still kept use of pedal-powered water pump.
