US bankers association claim digital dollar would give too much power to the Fed
Outlining its fears in testimony to the US FinTech task force last month, the American Bankers Association (ABA) stated that a digital version of the US dollar would hand an alarming amount of power over to the Federal Reserve.

In remarks made in June but only provided to a Senate Committee hearing this week, the private consortium of American banks argued that the Fed would become “the nation’s near-monopoly provider of currency, bank accounts and payment services” if an American central bank digital currency (CBDC) was pursued.

The ABA went on to warn: “The Federal Reserve would quickly become politicized as the central control point for monitoring and potentially denying transactions.”

Fearing that morphing of the central bank into “a national arbiter of social issues,” the group affirmed: “The right of people to transact outside the view of the central bank is a cherished civil liberty that is preserved and protected by the due process of a competitive private banking sector.”

The launch of the Facebook-led Libra Association in 2019 accelerated the research and development of CBDCs across the globe, with central bankers, politicians and many commentators recoiling at the prospect of a group of major corporations creating a competitive medium of exchange.

The potential for central banks to have near-complete insight into how individual citizens spend or save their money has raised a number of privacy concerns.

The ABA's statement has reflected these concerns but to some the group’s argument may ring hollow. It did not complain about the overreaching power of the Fed when the central bank shored up the American banking system following the Covid-19 crisis, with $2.3trn in liquidity injections.
