Leo is probably the most playful bear we have. He loves to play with toys and in his pond. Recently we've added a hose that comes off the top and sprays into the pond (to help us refill if the pond gets low), and he is thoroughly enjoying playing in that too. Love this bear. Always makes us smile!

Every year we get tons of questions about the bears and hibernation. Bears in captivity rarely fully hibernate. They do slow down a great deal, each much less, sleep a lot more - but they almost all still get up every day and go out for a stroll. Frankie is our most "hibernating bear", and sleeps the most and eats the least, but in general, everyone slows down a lot over the winter, but none fully go into a hibernation state. Additionally this time of year you will see much fatter bears as their bodies do bulk up for winter. Some can go from eating 30 lbs of food a day, to about 5 lbs, so this extra weight and bulk NOW get them through the winter.

With all the squirrels we had this year two of them were very memorable. They were very bonded, played together all the time and were were very gentle and sweet. Susan hadn't seen them in a while - since their release - and this week the two came dancing and playing back into the yard. All is well .... and they are still together.

Becky and Dan were released earlier this week (and I will post videos and pictures in the next day or so), but prior to that some fresh tree leaves were put into all their enclosures for some play and investigation. :)

Meet Randall. Randall came to us this week because he must be over-wintered and the rehabber that had him didn’t want him to be alone all winter. We are already over-wintering our other 12 opossums so we accepted him here, hopefully to live with them and have some companions. But so far Randall is very frightened (as you can see in this short video). He is afraid of Susan, and of the other opossums who are bigger than him. And so we will back things up and take it more slowly until he gains a little size, and some more confidence. It’s hard on them when they are so scared, but many come to us like this and in a short time they recognize they are safe and they calm down and adapt very well. And yes, he and all the other possums will be released in the spring. Welcome little Randall.

So we have some bad news and some good news. The deer that was ejected from her mama’s belly after she was hit by a car, did pass away last night. So very sad. Guess she just wasn’t ready to be born yet. However another fawn DID come in yesterday. This one had fallen into a lake and couldn’t get out. Some kind people were able to get her and her sibling out of the lake but one died. The other’s mom didn’t return for her and the fawn was clearly in distress. And so she is here now and again there are three. And these three all do seem to be doing well today.
Thank you all for the support and donations to help us. It always chokes us up when we ask for help and you respond so strongly. Thank you thank you thank you.
