THEME: REMAIN CONNECTED TO JESUS
READINGS: Acts 9: 26 – 31/ 1 John 3:18 – 24/ John 15:1 – 8
5th Sunday of Easter
In today’s gospel reading (John 15:1-8), Jesus uses the imagery of the vine and its branches to teach us that without him we can do nothing. On the other hand, if we are connected to him we receive many blessings and graces. For those not familiar with the vine and its branches, I wish to offer another imagery to encourage us to remain connected to Jesus. In our world today, the use of mobile phone has become a common feature. I, therefore, wish to use the connection between one’s phone and a telecom network to illustrate the need for us to remain connected to Jesus, so as to enjoy divine blessings and graces.

THEME: FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
READINGS: Acts 2:1-11/ Galatians 5:16-25/ John 15:26-27; 16:12-15
Pentecost Sunday
At his baptism, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove; the same Spirit led him to the desert where Jesus fasted and was tempted (Luke 4:1-12); and he returned to Nazareth filled with the same Spirit (Luke 4:14). Then, in the Synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus himself affirmed that he had been anointed for ministry by the Holy Spirit. In short, from the very beginning to the end of his ministry, Jesus Christ was filled with the Holy Spirit.
As Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit for his ministry, so his apostles, disciples, and indeed all Christians need to be filled with his Spirit. With the filling or anointing by the Spirit, we are able to display spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit. Let us learn from the apostles and disciples about how to display the spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit in our life and ministries.

THEME: REMOVE THE SANDALS FROM YOUR FEET
READINGS: Exodus 3:1-8, 13-15/ 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12/ Luke 13:1-9
3rd Sunday of Lent
As Moses got closer to the spectacle of the bush on fire, yet unconsumed, he heard the words: “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground” (Exo. 3:5). This injunction would later become for the Israelites the norm for entering the temple (the holy place of worship). Sandals collected dust or dirt, and with the understanding that ‘cleanliness is next to godliness’, the Israelites removed their footwear before entering the holy place of worship.

THEME: WINNING SOULS FOR CHRIST
READINGS: Isaiah 66:10-14/ Galatians 6:14-18/ Luke 10:1-12,17-20
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Fourteenth Sunday occurs in the middle of the year. In the first part of this year, we have prayed to the Lord for various blessings or favours: forgiveness, spiritual renewal, guidance, successes, jobs, protection, deliverance, healing, etc. We have already received some of these blessings. On the other hand, have we responded favourably to some of the things the Lord is asking us to do for Him? Particularly, were we soul-winning instruments in the first half of this year? If we have not yet done so then the gospel reading is reminding us of the mission to lead, at least, a soul to Christ before the year ends. If we have already facilitated a soul to meet Christ, He is still asking for more souls.

THEME: JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE
READINGS: Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12
5th Sunday of Easter
Today, let us reflect on this eternal life-assurance statement of our Lord Jesus Christ: ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (John 14:6). No one else either in the Bible or outside the Bible has made such a great claim! We will reflect on this verse by looking at what Jesus means by being: (1) the Way; (2) the Truth; and (3) the Life. Furthermore, in each of the above cases, we will look at three different meanings, indicating the unique manner in which Jesus is the Way, the Truth or the Life.
THE WAY: Let’s look at three meanings.
(a) Someone may claim to show you the way to a destination, but he may misdirect you for lack of knowledge of where you intend to go; or he may even rob you (imagine an armed robber pretending to be a ‘Good Samaritan’, and you inviting him to sit in your car to direct you). Similarly, leaders of idol-worship and of occultism may be misdirecting their adherents as far as the way of salvation is concerned.
(b) Secondly, someone may know the way to your destination, and give you directions to your destination, while he/she may not be going there. He/she becomes like a sign-post, pointing to your destination. In the Bible, Moses, for instance, was like a director or sign-post directing the Israelites to the Promised Land, but he himself did not get to that destination (cf. Deut. 32:48-52).
(c) Now, consider a situation where the person whom you ask to show you the way to, for example, Mr. Surufie’s house is his very son who happens to be on his way home; and so he leads you home without any worry as to whether the arrow on the sign-post is accurate or not. Jesus, the Son of God and the only mediator between God and man, is our Way in this third sense: He is the Only Son of the Father who takes or leads us to our heavenly destination. I, therefore, pray that while Jesus keeps the Way to heaven ever open to us, He may open other doors of opportunities for us. Amen!

THEME: THE PRIORITY OF PREACHING THE GOSPEL
READINGS: Job 7:1-4, 6-7/ 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 / Mark 1:29-39
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Consider this: there was a group made up of people with good eyesight in a place of total darkness. Which of the following would be more useful to them: walking sticks (aids) or light? I guess your answer is light. You are right, since though they can all see, their eyes are practically dysfunctional in darkness; but with light, they can clearly see their way round.

THEME: THE HOLY SPIRIT – PARACLETE AND TEACHER
READINGS: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29/ Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23/ John 14:23-29
6th Sunday of Easter
The solemn feast of Pentecost is just two weeks away and today’s gospel reading affords us the opportunity to meditate on the Holy Spirit. According to this reading, Jesus told his disciples [at the Last Supper]: “I have said these things to you while still with you; but the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you” (John 14:25-26). I have, therefore, titled today’s message: “The Holy Spirit – Paraclete and Teacher.”
