He was born on 15 Kartik 1327 BS (November 2, 1920) at Taramani Tila in the village of Noarai on the north bank of the Surma river in Chhatak. This Taramani Tila is later known as Durbin Tila. His father Safat Ali Shah was a Sufi saint and his mother Hasina Banu was a Pirani. He lost his father when he was only seven years old. He got married to Surfa Begum in 1947. Although Sufi and mysticism are prominent in most of his songs, he has written numerous songs of different moods.
