A Balanced Man The balanced man of Titus 2 would be someone you saw around at work or church and would be one of those ‘cool, calm, and collected’ types. They have a solid Biblical orientation that keeps them on an even keel emotionally and spiritually. They know God is ruling all things from the galaxies down to their little world. In each sphere of life, the Lordship of Christ is evident: as a dad, he would be a man who tries each day to be a caring, sacrificially loving husband and dad; as an employee or employer he would work hard at being diligent, consistent, and hard-working; as a believer he holds on to the consistent goal to stay in the Word, prayer, and ministry. What others notice is that he is not given to extremes. This man neither wearies himself with the mistaken idea that he alone can solve all the problems of the world and those around him; nor does he go through life uncaring of all the problems. He is balanced, he tries to follow his personal Biblical priorities and encourage others that he can reach out to in his life. Just briefly, listen to what I found by searching dozens of books on this word, and finding what many have said about this word through the centuries:  This man has learned what is worth living for, he invests his time, money, and strength carefully, living by priority rather than the moment—and has become contented with fewer and simpler things.  This man is balanced in that he has learned how to exercise appropriate emphasis upon the priorities he has concluded are his before God.  This man is not given to overindulgence, knowing what God's Word is that the pleasures gleaned from self-indulgence cost far more than they are worth.  This man has mental sobriety exhibited in self-restraint, a freedom from the debilitations of rash decisions, words, and behavior, as well as being stable, circumspect, and clear-thinking.  This man is in charge of his priorities, is steadfast, morally decisive, and not under the sway of the various allurements of the world, his flesh, and the devil.  The man is not controlled by outside circumstances but directed by inward convictions. In English, we would say he is level-headed, clear-minded, well-balanced, and unwavering.  In short, he is obedient to what Paul calls for ten times in the pastoral epistles, he is sober-minded just as we also see in the qualifications for a pastor in (1 Tim. 3:2). So, when preaching the Bible there are two valid methods that can be used: • One method is to focus solely upon just one verse or passage out of the over 31,000 verses of the Bible and to work only through the words and ideas of that verse alone, and then go on to the next. That is called textual preaching, or sticking to only the verse or text of the message. • The other method of preaching is expository preaching, which sticks to the text; but it also adds the weight of what God has said about that verse from any of the other 31,000 verses of the Bible. What we are doing in Revelation is this type of expository preaching of the Word. All of the 404 verses in the Book of Revelation are incredibly tied to what God began in Genesis and is in the process of finishing. God has given pieces of information, tucked away in the words of the Prophets about the events in the last days. Each of these is a powerful lesson about His character, and His plan, and teaches us more about how to worship and serve God through every season of our lives. The Supernatural Person called Satan This powerful, supernatural person shows up all the way through the Book of Revelation. By the time we get to chapter 12 we find the most complete explanation of him that makes all the pieces fit. Turn there with me there, to Revelation 12:3-4a (NKJV), and follow along as I read what God says: And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. In this verse we meet a dragon; then in the next verse (v. 4) this dragon draws a third of the angels under his control; then move on down to v. 7 and we see that there are two groups of angels Michael and the un-fallen angels of God vs. the Dragon and his fallen angels. Now, look at v. 9, which becomes like a Rosetta Stone that connects together several of the pieces of the world of Satan and his angels. Satan is the Devil, the Dragon, the Serpent, the Deceiver. In Rev. 12:9 we see God connecting Genesis with Revelation and everything in between. Here are the key points: 1. Satan is the Dragon (think of the book of Revelation); is also: 2. Satan is the Serpent of Old (think Eve in Garden of Eden); who is also: 3. Satan is the Devil (think wilderness temptation of Christ); who is also: 4. Satan is the Wicked one (think 1 John 5); who is also 5. Satan is the Accuser of the brethren (think of the book of Job scene); who is none other than: 6. Satan; who is the fallen and twisted version of the greatest of the angels named: 7. Lucifer. Here, in one verse God ties together the Cunning Serpent of the Garden that drew mankind into sin, with the Accuser of Job, with the Devil of Christ's Temptation, with Satan the Adversary of all that God is doing. All of these various depictions of Lucifer (Isaiah 14, Ezk. 28), fallen to become Satan the Devil, are united here in this verse.
