Atlanta-based garage rock band Night Shadow (aka Little Phil & The Night Shadows) endured a shape-shifting evolution. Early singles recorded for
independent labels made little impact, but a contract with Baja Records led to recording of The Square Root Of Two, their sole long-player, released in 1968. With sped-up vocals, phased guitar, backwards tape effects and spoken commentary, the album had strong psychedelic leanings applied to their bluesy, hard-edged garage rock; the group's implosion in 1969 ensured the rarity of this overlooked gem!
The tracklisting of the CD version on Cosmic Mind Records from 1993 was used here, including 2 extra tracks (#6 and #13).

Here's a delightful, seriously long live recording - a cool mix of garage, West Coast sounds, innocent 60's vibes, psychedelic guitar and jamming. This is better than the album which, while the band may have been thrilled to get signed to a major label (ABC) and have their album produced by Bill Szymczyk, was nowhere near what it could have been. This live show, though built around a lot of cover songs, will give a much better idea what the band was like live, with smoking dual guitars, tasty organ playing and some fine harmony vocals. These guys lend their own unique sound and arrangements to the songs with joy and innovation. Many of the songs are extremely inspired versions. According to the Discogs entry, they were "the house band at the Playboy Club in New York City in 1968 where they played 7 nights a week", which might explain the fact they shelved some of their own material in favor of crowd pleasers during live gigs. Many of you will know the band from their early singles, one of which was made legendary on an early "Pebbles" compilation. The Bold was a legend in Western Massachusetts, with band members all held in high regard.

1984 release by Erik Vloeberghs (Angst). "Strijd Tegen de Kerk" brings you sixty packed minutes including two long cut-up pieces that use found footage and recordings of television and radio programs with additional effects and synthesizer sounds, and a live-recording of an Angst performance. The main subjects in the cut-ups are political discussions with prime minister Wilfried Martens about the placement of US nuclear missiles in Belgium, and religious radio emissions. It also includes the cracking at the end of a Robert Wyatt record and manipulated bits of a Z'EV live performance. Subjects in the television and radio bits are nuclear weapons, crisis, depression, belief, Jesus Christ, sterilisation, menstruation, etc. The live bits were recorded at "Nacht van de Industrie" in Limelight, Kortrijk on 6 march 1983, where also La Drôlesse, AR/TE, Club Moral and Einstürzende Neubauten played.
