Ben is joined by Nora Barrows-Friedman from The Electric Intifada for an update on what's happening in Palestine. The last few weeks have seen a drastic escalation as settler colonialists from Israel continue to take Palestinian land and homes and a video went viral of "Settler Jacob," a man who appears to be from Brooklyn, who has stolen a Palestinian woman's land. This was followed by days of violence in Gaza including Israel bombing a residential building that contained media offices including the AP and Al Jazeera. Of course, the pandemic has made the disparities in Palestine even worse as Israel continues to deny Palestinians vaccines.

Slavoj Zizek informs Ben Burgis about the bleak, strange state of the pandemic in Slovenia. They go on to discuss Zizek's take on Covid 19 conspiracy theories, the most popular of which involves a global conspiracy by "big capital" (global banking and industry along with world governments??) caused the pandemic because a lockdown and disruption was needed in order to prevent another global financial crisis as in 2008. Another involves the attitude that if we all pretend that the Covid 19 pandemic is not happening, it will go away — mimicking an attitude toward climate change.

Ben Burgis and Producer Jake discuss a Twitter exchange between former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and libertarian economist Gene Epstein (who’s debated Ben multiple times). Ben argues that the idea that the minimum wage “hurts the people it’s supposed to help” by increasing unemployment makes no damn sense whatsoever. Jake asks how we can respond to conservatives who want to know how much would be too much.

Self-described conservative social democrat comes on to talk to Ben Burgis about his new book "Tyranny, Inc.: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty--and What to Do About It." Most likely Ben and Sohrab are going to agree about a lot when it comes to what's wrong with our late capitalist hellhole but disagree on both halves of "conservative social democrat"--the "conservative" half and the half about stopping at social democracy instead of aiming at socialism. Matt Christman is going to stop by in-studio for the postgame with patrons.

Richard Wolff: professor emeritus, author, writer, economist, host of the weekly independent show/podcast “Economic Update,” and cofounder of nonprofit Democracy at Work joins Ben Burgis to give the full story behind the Mondragon Corporation, which is a federation of worker co-ops in the Basque region of Spain that has been in operation since the mid 1950s.
The New York “Times” recently published an article about the Mondragon worker cooperatives, and Professor Wolff would like to make it clear just how ridiculous their article, titled “Co-ops in Spain’s Basque Region Soften Capitalism’s Rough Edges,” is, from start to finish.
Wolff tells the story of the beginnings of the co-ops in the mid 1950s as a suggestion of a Catholic priest in the region who encouraged parishioners to find their own way out of poverty rather than waiting for companies to come to the region to provide jobs. The cooperatives have diversified beyond any conceivable expectation, and are now under the umbrella of the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation. The co-ops still operate individually as worker-owned and worker-run entities.

A recent book, Capitalism for Realists, tries to respond to some of Ben's criticisms of the Fraser Institute's biased, faulty economic freedom rankings. Ben sets the record straight.
