capoeira
Brazilian martial art
Capoeira or capoeiragem is an Afro-Brazilian cultural expression and sport that mixes martial art, dance and music, developed in Brazil by descendants of African slaves possibly at the end of the 16th century in Quilombo dos Palmares (in the current state of Alagoas), which resisted for more than a century in the old Captaincy of Pernambuco.

Characterized by agile and complex strikes and movements, primarily using kicks and sweeps, as well as headbutts, knees, elbows, ground or aerial acrobatics. It distinguishes itself from other martial arts through its musicality, where practitioners called capoeiristas learn, in addition to fighting and playing, to play typical instruments and sing. The one who ignores musicality is considered an incomplete fighter and without sportsmanship.
Roda de Capoeira was registered as a cultural asset by IPHAN in 2008, based on an inventory carried out in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. And in November 2014, it received the title of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The capoeira practiced today has two main strands: Angola (from the Banto Ngolo), which presents lower movements and had master Pastinha as its main exponent; and the regional one (initially called Luta Regional Baiana), which has more aerial movements and had Mestre Bimba as its main exponent. The latter was created in Salvador, the city where the first capoeira academy in Brazil was founded in 1937.
