I always wanted a decent curve tracer to check up on replacement parts with a bit more scrutiny. But the price was alwas a limiting factor. And the Tektronix model here is also quite heavy, so shipping usually almost doubles that. By the end of 2023, an online friend said he had to sell off his, due to lack of time, space and money. Add that to another online contact making a journey by car earlier in 2024, and I just couldn't pass up the chance! I always had a thing for these open reel recorders... But as a child, these were still "audiophile" grade equipment and way beyond my families price range. Earlier this year I came across an affordable unit that seemed like a nice candidate for restoration. It is branded as HIFIVOX MHB 14 - but the backside says "UNITRA ZRK"... as far as I can tell, this makes it a Polish base unit that got rebadged by several other "big name" brands, including Grundig. I have no idea what the original model number is, as the serial number sticker is missing and the "ZRK" Google results show several similar but not exactly the same models. If anybody has an idea - or better yet, a manual - please poke me! Originally, I intended to have this video as a single parter, but a slight mishap involving a screw and a few transformer windings caused my progress to stop very short of completion. A new transformer is on order and hopefully there should be a part two for the next episode! Workshop Project #21 - HP 1630G Logic Analyzer Originally, I wanted to have a turntable project, complete with portable tube amp ready for this episode, but it turns out that that needs way more than just a clean and new caps after all... so, back to another standby project! This one is an HP 1630 Logic State Analyzer, model "G". The 1600 series of HP started in the mid 1970s with a rather simple 16-bit visualization device that used a scope tube to show a grid of 0s and 1s. Quite interesting, especially the row of 16 switches to configure the trigger... ...fast forward a few years and we have this model in early 1980s (1983-ish according to a catalog I found online) and we have a monochrome CRT with quite a bunch of ICs that move data around. The "G" model has 65 input channels, eight of which can be either state or timing capture channels; I still have to read up on the timing thingy, haven't tried that one out yet. The general idea is to visualize correlated logic levels. This enables board level debugging of microcontroller/microprocessor based circuits and is a huge benefit when dealing with these kind of products. I was lucky enough to find this unit for rather cheap, again, untested. What does it hold in store for us? This is a shorter one, fitting the season and allowing me to get some older videos out. When I got my first Arduino, back in 2016, I wanted to do a test-project with it. Complete with some poking around in GitHub to see what all the hubub was about. I decided to implement a sort of "advanced blink" project, where I could control the blinking pattern for several channels of LEDs. As a practical use case, I wanted to make a nice looking, cartoony christmas ornament, based on a comic by Keno Don Rosa ("Fir-Tree Fracas", originally published in 1988) where Donald Duck is trying to impress his family and a tiny snag (literally) turns his elaborate and expensive Christmas tree into a modern art installation, whith the lights blinking "S.O.S." in morse code. I loved that little throwaway joke so much, that I had to incorporate it into my little project! I commissioned Karpour to draw the illustration of myself getting tangled up in Christmas lights, so I could put the LEDs into the proper spots. I didn't want to fiddle with transistors, so I looked up what the Arduino was capable of and kept it at two LEDs per pin, with seven used pins total. That should keep things cool and stable. Disclaimer: most of the footage has been shot over two years ago and might seem a bit odd here since it predates the whole "tinkering" series. I also had some recording issues, mostly while building the cyclone, and so I could not show all the details I would have loved to show... Sorry for that, but I think my video footage backlog still is worth making the odd video. About two months ago, I was watching a restoration video by @CuriousMarc - he received two "identical" HP 410C VTVMs. While he tried to get both into a working state again, he mentioned that one of them was too far gone to be continued that time: it needed too much spare parts and would have to wait for some donor system. I reached out to him about maybe continuing the work on that unit? I did some transformer rewinding before after all! So, obviously, he agreed and after hammering out the details for shipping: here we are! Let's dig in! In this second part, I clean up the case, go over the circuitry on the PCBs, connect up some wires for the probes and make my own DC probe replacement. But then, the AC probe issue is causing some grief: I wanted to make a replacement, but the nice small RF diode tubes I found are lost in the mail somewhere. Repair #3: Desk Clock There's a lot of little things that my grandfather left my mother and me. Most of which were aged to a point where they are beyond repair, as was the case with the desk clock he had sitting in the back room. It was wood worm infested and - whenever it would work for a bit - crumbled when the chimes hit. So my mom decided it should get thrown away. I saved the clockwork back then and built a new case; because I kind of like the memory of these chimes... childhood memories and such, you know... Anyhow, the clock worked for quite a bit until it stopped... this is my attempt at repairing and finishing up the project from early 2015.
