Great C64 version of Fix-it Felix Jr, the fictional retro game from the hit 2012 Disney film, Wreck-it Ralph! You can download the game for free via itch.io (https://brokenbytes.itch.io/fix-it-felix-jr), or make an optional payment; any money made from sales goes to charity (UNICEF).
The game has 16 difficulty levels, introducing additional obstacles and hazards with each loop. I wasn't sure if the game had an ending or not, so I played through to round 17 to check (it just carries on).

Designed and programmed entirely by Paolo Galimberti, MoonShadow is a blend of arcade and basic puzzling action.
The hero must scour the forest and nearby fortress for objects that will aid in his quest to rid the land of evil.
So it's not the most original of its, and is far too difficult for its own good, but there's a certain charm that will hold your interest. The game world is pretty big too, so you won't be finishing it in a hurry.

Entry for RGCD 16K Cartridge Game Dev Competition 2019
One of this year's Retrogamer CD 16KB game dev competition entries, the time-zone switching mechanic in this platformer is really rather clever.
I particularly like the way the music goes all lo-fi when switching to the earlier timeline, and the PETSCII style graphics in that mode are pretty cool too.

I'd never heard of this game before, but a picture was enough to pique my interest.
It turns out Buccaneers is just a total rip-off of Kung-Fu Master and Vigilante, but there's a definite charm to this swashbuckling side-scroller. It's VERY short, and apart from the inclusion of a musket for ranged combat, there's little to recommend the game. Even so, it's still pretty cool!

Great brawler that easily rivals Final Fight and is better in many ways; better combat, visuals, and a genuine sense of humour!

Despite a release two years previously, someone evidently felt that the original release of Congo Bongo on the C64 didn't live up to expectations. In many ways they were right, so I suppose that this "deluxe" version of the game was made to try and right the wrongs of the original.
Unlike the 1983 version, this version contains all of the levels from the arcade version. The graphics have been completely redrawn and look very attractive when compared with it's predecessor and I particularly liked the incidental vulture perched high above the play-field in stage two. However, the main sprite looks less like the Great White Hunter and more like Eugene the Jeep.
The sound is still very basic, but is an improvement over the original.
The obvious question to answer is, is this the better version of the game? Having now played both I can say yes, this is the better version, although it still doesn't represent decent value for money. Sure, the game has more stages, but they can all be completed within a minute or two and there is virtually no replayability. The game's level counter ticks over and I think I saw the addition of one more snake on the first level, but that was the extent of the change.
If I'd bought this for £1.99 or £2.99 then I'd feel reasonably happy with the purchase, especially as there are plenty of games worse than this. However, Congo Bongo was never going appeal in the same way as Nintendo's Donkey Kong did and will forever be overshadowed by his fellow ape.

Pretty cool mech shooting game from Taito which, unsurprisingly, feels a bit like Operation Thunder Bolt crossed with Battle Tech. You've got a chaingun, a plasma cannon, and a whole load of bad guys between you and victory.

This is based on the the kids cartoon that was broadcast on UK television in the late 80s and early 90s. It's a standard affair where you must help Bangers collect a load of fruit for a pie that his mum is making.
As a platform game, it's not too bad, but it has some infuriating pixel precision jumping, and the way that the witch can spawn right underneath you as you're falling down can get a bit tiresome.
Once you collect all the fruit on stage 1, you take a balloon up to stage 2. Stage 2 has various lumps of half-eaten fruit that you mustn't touch, else you lose a life. Mash will also appear on certain platforms and try to drop boulders on your head; nice one bro!
There are also diamonds to collect for bonus points, but you only need the fruit to win the game. Once you do win, Bangers appears in his tree-house and, I presume, blows on a party blower...he could also be eating a worm or smoking a pipe, it's difficult to tell.
You don't even get to see the bloody pie you've been collecting fruit for!

I think the best way to describe this game is a budget Street Fighter II, minus the polish. Everything works at a basic level, but the hit detection can be questionable, certain moves make the opponent completely impervious to any kind of counter-attack, and the stick/button combos needed to execute special moves require some very nimble fingers.
Best of Best isn't a total bust, just is completely and utterly forgettable.
