Upon becoming president, Chávez immediately set about dismantling the old regime dominated by neoliberal U.S. capital. Chavez called it the "Bolivarian revolution" after Simon Bolivar, the hero of South American independence in the 19th century, and launched a campaign to rewrite the country's constitution based on laws and principles that promote social and economic justice and participatory democracy. In order to break away from neoliberal policies, Chávez announced land reform and reform of the state-owned oil company PDVSA, implementing policies to redistribute oil revenues to social spending for the poor. The CIA, which orchestrated the overthrow of the Chavez regime, carried out a coup d'état in April 2002, but failed. When the CIA-fabricated coup d'état took place between April 11 and 13, 2002, this shocking event was filmed like an epic drama by an Irish camera crew who happened to be shooting a film about Chavez. Wednesday, 04/10 A high-ranking officer in the Army, a general, appeared on civilian television, read a script that was supposedly written by the CIA, and demanded that Chavez abdicate power.　Later, Carmona, the U.S.-endorsed proxy president, called on wealthy white people to march on the state-owned oil company PDVSA. Thursday, 04/11 Thousands of wealthy anti-regime protesters began marching toward the state oil company PDVSA. Meanwhile, outside the presidential palace, poor supporters of the Chavez regime gathered one after another. Suddenly, opposition leaders illegally changed the course of their anti-government march and directed the protesters to the presidential palace. The military tried to act as a buffer to separate the crowd, but out of nowhere, snipers who were hiding opened fire, shooting several demonstrators in the head, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens from both sides. The CIA-controlled media accused Chavez supporters who returned fire on the snipers of "shooting innocent anti-government marchers." Although there was no evidence that supporters of the Chavez government opened fire on peaceful demonstrators, the lies repeated in the media controlled by CIA were a scenario for the coup conspirators to trigger a well-planned crisis. Then, several senior military officials appeared on television and called on Chavez to resign. Friday, 04/12 In the early hours of Friday morning, to avoid further bloodshed, Chavez was arrested at the presidential palace and agreed to leave peacefully as he was taken hostage by coup perpetrators and eventually taken to a remote island. With the president abducted and no one in the way, the oligarchy political forces immediately set up a puppet government, which was soon legalized by the United States. Carmona became the new president, and the National Assembly and the Supreme Court were dissolved. The new People's Constitution was abolished. Everything seemed to be lost. Saturday, 04/13 Then something unprecedented happened. From Caracas' shantytowns, a large number of Chavez supporters surrounded the presidential palace and demanded the return of the legitimate president. Meanwhile, junior officers loyal to President Chávez raided the presidential palace to retake it. The new president, Carmona, backed by the CIA, escaped but was arrested in Fuerte Tiuna. Sunday, 04/14 Returning to the Miraflores presidential palace early Sunday morning, Chavez was greeted by thousands of supporters.
