#LetchworthVillage #NewYork #Cemetery From 1914 through 1967, residents who died at Letchworth Village and whose remains were not claimed by their families were buried at a clearing in the forest a short distance off Call Hollow Road in Stony Point, New York, about a mile away from the 2,000-acre main facility campus, and hidden from the road by trees. The cemetery is presently owned and maintained by the town of Stony Point, along with volunteers from the community. The decedents' graves were marked only with T-shaped, numbered steel markers. Families were allowed to erect headstones at their own expense, but as of this edit in August of 2021, most of the graves are still marked only by the numbered steel markers. Remarkably few of the markers or stones have been vandalized. On the contrary, some of the graves, especially those of children, are regularly visited by members of the community who leave stones, flowers, or other items in remembrance of the deceased. There also is a large memorial stone at the entrance of the cemetery, erected in 2007, with a plaque bearing the names of those buried there. The names are not keyed to the numbered graves. Many stones, small toys, and other items are left on the stone in remembrance of those buried there. In 1967, a new cemetery was opened near Thiells Mount Ivy Road in Thiells, New York. #JennieGrossinger #Abandoned #BorschtBelt *EPISODE 5* Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel was a resort in the Catskill Mountains in the Town of Liberty, near the village of Liberty, New York. One of the largest Borscht Belt resorts, it was a kosher establishment that catered primarily to Jewish clients from New York City. After decades of activity and notable guests, it closed in 1986. The resort buildings were demolished in 2018. Our love story with Grossinger’s began in the spring of 2017. We grew to love the resort and the history behind its grandeur. We ventured respectfully into its halls and closed our eyes to picture how it must have been. Along the way, we discovered the story of Jennie Grossinger and her amazing life! We wrote a story about our adventures there and about how we felt about Jennie…below is a piece of our writing and our desire to honor the Grossinger legacy…. Haunting echoes from the original owner and matriarch Jennie Grossinger's house cried out to us as we scanned the dirt where her cozy house stood. How would she feel to see her dreams…remnants of her extraordinary life being bulldozed into asbestos saturated dust? We scanned the perimeter for a place to respectfully enter her abode. We were eager to see what was left. Eager to pay our last respects to this hallowed ground. Our eyes met as we turned to the mountain of rubble just beyond the gateway. Shards of glass, jagged stacks of cement, and the ominous smell of less than healthy dust particles greeted us with their intriguing embrace as we made out way toward ground zero. The blue sky shimmered above as haunting images of detonation filled our minds. What a sight it must have been to see the grand building’s demise. What once stood so proud and tall, had fallen into desolation and in return had broken the hearts of at least two explorers that held her forsaken structures with great affection and regard. Our collective sigh echoed in the abyss of debris as we turned the camera on ourselves. Our usual playful and lighthearted introduction felt shadowed by a sense of loss and regret. How can you seize the day, when the stroke of midnight intrudes? But even in the shadow of despair comes the opportunity to shine. We quickly turned our attention past the ruins to the treasures beyond. It was a chance to seize the day without regret and to deliver a message of adventure without delay. The day went by all too quickly as we found ourselves immersed in its abandoned brilliance. Although a few of our favorite places had fallen, many remained.
