Needle Felting Tutorial: How to Needle Felt Easter Eggs
Happy Spring! Enjoy this how to needle felt an Easter egg tutorial :) You don't need much in terms of supplies. Be creative, colorful and resourceful and have a fantastic time!
Felting foam (thick sponges will do!) Wool (sheep is great but if you have a fluffy dog...start brushing!) Suri alpaca locks (any fiber will do or even felt strips from craft stores, or dye some of the above!) Felting needle...these are barbed so you need to get some of these :)
I may have some supply packs in my Etsy store or website store shortly...you can find all links at https://www.WisteriaSuriRanch.com

I love gently hand shearing my alpacas with lots of love and respect. I learned to hand shear after feeling super stressed out watching my alpacas getting shorn the typical way. I love hand shearing and so do my alpacas. Enjoy! www.WisteriaSuriRanch.com

Raise Alpacas with Love: Desensitizing Crias for Toe Nail Trimming
Alpaca care doesn't need to be hard ;) This is how I start desensitizing crias for toenail trimming. I stay in front of them and clip a little bit as they let me. Since most of them do not have long toenails at this point, I am mostly making them comfortable with the sensation of the trimmer on their toenails. So you can just tap their nails if there is nothing to trim. I have treats and move them around to help reposition them as needed. I do not restrain them and will let them walk away if they do not want to be trimmed that day.
I use a goat hoof trimmer for my alpacas. You can touch the toenails and stabilize them as well but as soon as you touch their feet with your hands, they will instinctively want to lift their leg and make it difficult to trim.
My alpaca farm, Wisteria Suri Ranch, is in Taylor, Texas. We raise suri alpacas and I've been an alpaca shepherdess since 2008 :) We love to handle our alpacas gently and always treat them with love and respect.
Let me know if you have questions!

Raise Alpacas with Love: Hand Shearing Suri Alpaca
Alpaca fiber harvest time! We used to have professional shearers come and shear our herd but our spoiled rotten alpacas were not happy...so we learned the traditional way with electric shearers and tie-downs (later rotating tables)...but my alpacas were still not happy and neither was my back...so... I got creative with my Suri alpacas and trained them to be shorn standing with hand shears and lots of treats! This girl was always cooperative but after a few years, most allow me to shear without much fuss. They actually get more cooperative every year and look forward to being in my "Barn Cuts Salon" :) hehehehehe.
No more stress, less back pain, and very clean fiber! Oh, and the cost savings is awesome...especially since I consider this pure bonding time! The hand shearing scissors are KEY though! I tried and went through so many...since my hands are small and most scissors dull after one alpaca!!! The one I am using is the one I love- I got it from Amazon and is a spring-loaded craft scissors...think it was Thorton arts/crafts one. I can usually get 20+ alpacas on 2 scissors without sharpening.
Feel free to ask me questions! I have a few more hand shearing clips I will post soon.

Raise Alpacas with Love: Desensitizing Crias for SubQ Shots
Alpaca care doesn't have to be stressful~ giving shots used to scare the living daylights out of me, especially to these cute alpaca babies! We usually give CDT (for Tetanus) ourselves and leave the rest to our vet. But it's important to know how to give shots especially if they get sick. You will follow vet instructions, but they generally will have you administer them. So...to alleviate as much stress as possible, I prep the babies (and mostly ME!) and give shots without restraint.
In this video, I just tug at the location where I would be injecting them and let them get used to that sensation while eating treats. This allows me to give shots mostly without restraint when the time comes. Some won't even flinch and continue to eat their treats. If I have a flighty one, I have my husband help me so no one gets hurt.
***Sorry about the video quality- and its abrupt ending... hope you will still get the idea on how it's done. I am still working on my video skills.***

Our baby alpaca unfortunately became an orphan at 36 hours when his sweet mom passed away unexpectedly. We were in shock but started to bottle feed little Milano every few hours. Alpaca babies are not good candidates for bottle feeding especially male crias. They can have behavioral problems if handled too much. We have been super careful and started to record our journey as it is relatively rare to have an orphaned alpaca baby.
In the 12 years we've raised alpacas, this is our first orphan. I waited until he was growing into a very healthy well-adjusted baby before sharing this video as I couldn't handle another heartache in the event he didn't make it either.
As of March 2020, Milano is gaining weight better than many of our babies and is very happy with his herd. His full sister in the video, Sophie, has really taken on a loving role and is always with him. Dezi, who initially stepped up to be with him 24/7 has also been amazing. The herd has been incredible and it is empowering to see the resilience Milano shows us daily. Animals teach us so much.
We all miss his mom, Star, but under these circumstances, I don't think things could have gone better. We feel very blessed with all the support, assistance and guidance from everyone- thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I have more videos I have taken of Milano and will be uploading them soon, so be sure to subscribe to be notified if you are interested. Our website is at https://WisteriaSuriRanch.com. You can learn more about our farm at the website. We believe in raising our alpacas with respect and kindness.

Our sweet little Milano is getting his first shearing at 20 weeks old. He is eating treats and is completely unrestrained. He did really well and will be nice and cool for the hot Texas summer!
Baby alpaca fleeces are very sweet and delicate, so I'm taking my time to carefully shear him so I can save his beautiful fleece. There isn't much to shear, but it's precious to me :)
Enjoy!
