Geometry 3.4a, Construct a Perpendicular bisector of a segment
An explanation of perpendicular bisectors, and how to construct a perpendicular bisector of a segment. How to find the distance from a point to a line as the length of the perpendicular segment from the point to the line. Write and solve an inequality for x as the length of one of the segments.

A sample space is the set of all possible outcomes for an experiment. A sample space can be small, such as the two outcomes when a coin is flipped. It can also be large, such as the possible number of dog owners in the state of Kentucky. Identifying the sample space can help us calculate the probability of an event. We walk-through an example of the probability of heads when flipping a coin. We walk-through an example of the probability of landing on red with a spinner.

A box plot is a graph that shows how data values are distributed by using the median, lower quartile, upper quartile, least value, and the greatest value. A box plot is also known as a box-and-whisker plot. The line segments that connect the lowest value to the lower quartile of the box, and the greatest value to the upper quartile of the box look like whiskers. To make a box plot, we put the data in order from least to greatest, then find five values. We find the least value, the lower quartile as the median of the lower half of the data, the median, the upper quartile as the median of the upper half of the data, and the greatest value. We show a walk-through of making a box plot for 9 data values. Remember, the median is the middle value with an equal number of data values to its left and to its right. If there are two middle values, we find the mean or the average, of those two values as the median of the data values. If there's an odd number of values, it's easy, we can choose the middle number. When there's an even number of values, we find the mean of the two middle values as the median.

To find decimal sums and differences, we can use mental math and properties, pencil and paper, or a calculator. The Commutative Property of Addition lets us change the order of two addends. We'll get the same sum. The Associative Property of Addition lets us change the way addends are grouped. We can use mental math to add decimals if we use the Commutative and Associative Properties of Addition. When we add decimals by using place value and regrouping, we add them just as we would add whole numbers. But, we must line up the decimal points. We show many different types of calculators. But any calculator can solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. To add or subtract decimals on a calculator, we push a key for each part of the equation. The sum or difference will appear on the screen. But, using our brain power will strengthen our math skills. Be careful when using a calculator! If we accidentally push the the wrong key, we will get a wrong answer. We can estimate the sum or difference to be sure our answer is reasonable. We can also use the calculator a second time to see if we get the same answer. Sometimes mental math or paper and pencil will be faster than using a calculator. The Commutative and Associative properties cannot be used for subtraction because they change the order of the digits. The minuend needs to be first. Remember, we can use trailing zeros to the right of a decimal to give it more digits so we can regroup. We can use an inverse operation to solve for an unknown amount, such as a variable, or to check our answer. We solve an equation in which we first find the sum of the addends that we know, then use subtraction to find an unknown amount. We solve a word problem that involves addition and subtraction of decimals.

Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Irrational numbers cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers, or as a repeating or terminating decimal. We show how to estimate the value of an irrational number by finding two consecutive perfect squares that it is between. We write a compound inequality, and we take the square root of each number by placing them within a radical sign. Then we simplify the square roots of the perfect squares to find the two rational numbers that the square root falls between. We show how we can and find a more accurate answer by using the guess and check method.

We begin the lesson by reviewing natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and real numbers. A rational number is any number that can be written as a ratio in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not 0. Every rational number can be written as a terminating decimal. A repeating decimal has a block of one or more digits that repeats indefinitely. We write a bar above the digits that repeat. We show how we can use long division to write a fraction as a decimal. We show how we can turn a mixed number into a fraction greater than 1 and then divide, or set the whole number aside and divide the fraction part. In some repeating decimals, all of the digits repeat. In other repeating decimals, one or more digits repeat.

The signs of the coordinates of a figure change when the figure is reflected across the x-axis and y-axis. There are rules we can follow for changing the signs of the coordinates after a reflection. If we reflect across the x-axis we multiply the y-coordinates by -1. If we reflect across the y-axis we multiply each x-coordinate by -1. We walk-through several reflections across the y-axis or x-axis. A reflection maps a figure onto its image. Arrow notation describes the mapping. We can read the arrow as "maps to".
