Over 150 Guitarists Join the Fight to Help Sick Boy
One week ago, Angie LaBorde from the Squishy Guitar Project put out a call for 100 guitarists to help give a morale boost to Aiden Garcia, a boy with a medical condition called aplastic anemia. Her idea was to create a video montage of guitar players showing their support. Thanks to the help of YouTube channels like Phillip McKnight, CGS, and others, the goal was SMASHED! By the time of the deadline, over 150 guitarists had responded with videos of support.
Aiden recently had a bone marrow transplant at a children's hospital in Houston, Texas and will have to remain in quarantine for 100 days while he recovers from surgery. With help from Eddie Curnan, The Squishy Guitar Project will present Aiden a customized guitar, along with this video montage from members of the guitar community across the globe. If you'd like to learn more about the Squishy Guitar Project and its mission, or to show your support, click here: https://squishyguitarproject.com/ All proceeds from this video will go to the Squishy Guitar Project. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfUkR7XFMLs
Valco made a few small amplifiers during and after the war years. This model, an early Bantam - with its 510-8 circuit - is probably among the smallest and simplest they made. I'm not sure about the model name of this amp as I do not have catalogs from this period and have only ever seen one other example of this model, but I do know they made one version called the "Bantam", which had no controls on it at all! This one sports a black and white faux leather covering and a whopping 6" speaker - perfect for stadium gigs. Tubes are 6V6, 5Y3, and 6SL7. It's 5-watt single-ended power output is similar to other small amps of the day, including the Fender Champion (Champ) 600, which came out the same year this one was made.
When I got this one, it hadn't been well looked after. Although the circuit was, for the most part, untouched, the speaker was missing and the cab condition left something to be desired.
Here, we will take a look at the schematic and try to restore this as sympathetically as possible to its original condition while making it, once again, a useful, reliable, great-sounding recording amp.

Getting decent audio quality for YouTube videos has been a struggle. There are a couple ways one can go - recording audio separate from video and recombining in post production, or inputting audio into camera and record directly with either the internal mic or external setup. In this video I'll talk about some steps I'm taking to improve my audio quality before my next video, which should be a super cool one!

In this video we'll do a complete teardown and demo of an all-original, vintage Magnatone 260 tube combo amp. This was near Maggie's top of the line at the time and featured their innovative and impressive frequency modulating vibrato circuit. This patented circuit, also called the "F.M. Vibrato", used a 12ax7 oscillator circuit, two 6CG7 tubes, and four varistors, also known as a voltage-dependent resistors (VDR), to manipulate the phase of different signals and thereby achieve a real modulating pitch.
For anyone wishing to build a clone of this Magnatone Vibrato circuit, Terry Dobbs (Mr. Valco) has told me he thinks the modern equivalent varisistor for the Magnatone original is Metrosil series # 100-P-W/921. While I cannot confirm the accuracy of this, it might be a good place to begin experimenting. Terry also told me, "legend has it that other old stock subs for the Workman FS1205 are the Zenith 63-5058, Zenith 63-10868, workman #'s FS-308, FR-1039 and FS-1226 I have not personally verified these or the Metrosil's as I still have a couple FS-1205's left in stock." He says his info came from Gary, who used to build Juke Amps.
Hope that info helps someone wishing to clone this extraordinarily great-sounding tube circuit.

Took a road trip from Louisville, KY down through the capital, Frankfort, and on to Lexington this past weekend and along the way went shopping at thrift stores like Goodwill, Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul, and also at antique malls for goodies to resell or use in my videos. Also found a few vinyl records to fill in some gaps in my collection. At the end of this video, as a bonus, I'll show you how I shop for vintage guitar equipment on Craigslist and give you a few time tested tips on what to look for and what to avoid. Also, we'll look at probably one of the most hilarious guitar models I've ever seen in my life - the "F*ck Cumslinger". Not kidding.
