Producers are clever and always trying to save a buck. Don't let a 3 letter word drop the rates in your area by 22%. You think I'm joking? Perhaps I'm being over dramatic. In this video I'll show you the math and explain why this is an accurate statement especially in the world of reality TV, ENG and commercials.
Sound is not an easy department to work in and as productions get more and more demanding, our workload increases. For some reason this isn't acknowledged and there's a constant pushback that sound professionals experience. It wasn't long ago that sound mixers on reality TV jobs created a mix directly to camera and only managed a few channels of wireless but today production is often wanting the world and wants to pay less than they were 10 years ago despite the skillset being much higher than back then.
I encourage my fellow brothers and sisters in the sound community, and other crafts, to spend 7 minutes and watch this entire video. The goal of this videos is to explain some things you might not know or have considered and if you found this video helpful, I encourage you to share it.

Even professionals sometime lack in plant micing skills so in this video I'm going to show a few tricks that I use when planting microphones to make sure I get the best possible results.

If you swing a boom, you need to pay attention because you're two minutes away from understanding one simple rule of thumb you need to remember to prevent your microphones from phasing. This is really more about how you mix together two microphones in close proximity but boom operators need to have an understand of what's going on to help the mixer and post.
Two matching boom mics in the same area will pick up the same sound waves. If the timing of the sound waves entering each microphone is slightly different, and both microphones are mixed together, the waves can cancel each other out and create some undesirable audible effects. In this video we'll discuss why and why you need to do to help prevent this.
Note: This rule doesn't only apply to vertically stacked microphones. It also applies to microphones on the same horizontal plane.

Sound mixers like to plant themselves and not move. It doesn't matter that the rest of the production crew are moving all over the place, they will tune them out and live in their own quiet, climate controlled world. This can make things difficult for a sound utility who has the task of getting picture for the sound mixer.
When the camera is facing away from the room the sound mixer is hiding in, no problem but when camera is looking directly at that room, you can to route cables somewhere camera doesn't see. Outdoors this can mean very lengthy cable runs and running them many times - every time the production turns around. Here's a trick that could save you a lot of time routing hundreds of feet of cable far and wide around what the camera sees.

With the rise of 2.4GHz wireless transmitter packs with internal rechargable batteries flooding the internet, the time has come to discuss something important... but not be me. During the shutdown of 2020 I offered my channel to viewers interested in producing sound content. Some reached out but one followed thru until a few months back when a second did.
Marius from Kreolis Media Productions in Finland (https://kreolis.net) is a PHD student in electrical engineering and reached out about the affects that charging wireless transmitter packs has on your audio if done in your audio bag. We went back and forth and he produced a couple versions of this video and now, I bring it to you.
Personally, I find this video fascinating and feel that he produced the video well. For that reason, I've chosen to let the testing portion of this video play as it was sent to me. It's quite enlightening so if you are interested in the Rode Go II or Deity Connect 2.4GHz wireless systems, here's some info that you should be aware of if you're looking charge your transmitters inside your audio bag using the same battery that is powering your bag.

If you wear any device that involves panel mount XLR connectors (especially female XLR connectors) and you encounter scratchy XLR connections, you can drive yourself crazy resoldering your connectors every few weeks or you can fix it using this free quick fix.
Note: On the male XLR connector, I recommend bending the pins OUTWARD but should your sound mixer want to mod their own device with female panel mount XLR jack, I recommend bending those pins INWARD. Also, don't mod your mixer's gear without permission or expect to get fired and have to pay to replace it out of pocket if you botch it.
