This collection of essays on sustaining digital libraries is a report of early findings from pioneers who have worked to establish digital libraries, not merely as experimental projects, but as ongoing services and collections intended to be sustained over time in ways consistent with the long-held practices of print-based libraries. Particularly during this period of extreme technological transition, it is imperative that programs across the nation - and indeed the world - actively share their innovations, experiences, and techniques in order to begin cultivating new standard practices. The collective sentiment of the field is that we must begin to transition from a punctuated, project-based mode of advancing innovative information services to an ongoing programmatic mode of sustaining digital libraries for the long haul.About the AuthorDr. Katherine Skinner is the Executive Director of the Educopia Institute, an independent not-for-profit 501(c)3 educational organization dedicated to improving scholarly communication in socially responsible ways (httpeducopia.org). Written in 1727, The Art of Sinking in Poetry was one of Alexander Popes contributions to the literary output of the legendary Scriblerus club - a circle of writers dedicated to mocking what they perceived as a culture of mediocrity and false learning prevalent in the arts and sciences of their day. Taking the form of an ironic guide to writing bad verse, Popes tongue-in-cheek essay is wickedly funny in its lampooning of various pompous poetasters, as well as being essential reading for any budding writer wishing to avoid sinking to the unintentionally ridiculous, and instead reach for the sublime. **Review As the sublime was becoming fashionable, Alexander Pope produced a brilliant guide to this tendency, his Art of Sinking in Poetry. It was a compendium of the failed sublimities of other poets, many of them contemporaries, and it introduced the word `bathos to the English language. * The Guardian * About the Author Alexander Pope (16881744) was an English poet, widely regarded as the greatest of the 18th century, best known for his satirical verse. His other works include The Dunciad, An Essay on Man, and The Rape of the Lock.

One of the most powerful poetry collections of the twentieth century, now in a beautiful new editionAlthough The Book of Hours is the work of Rilkes youth, it contains the germ of his mature convictions. Written as spontaneously received prayers, these poems celebrate a God who is not the Creator of the Universe but rather humanity itself and, above all, that most intensely conscious part of humanity, the artist. Babette Deutschs classic translationsborn from the pure desire to sing what the poet sang (Ursula K. Le Guin)capture the rich harmony and suggestive imagery of the originals, transporting the reader to new heights of inspiration and musicality.**ReviewIf Rilke cut himself shaving, he would bleed poetry. (Stephen Spender - *The New York Review of Books*) Rilke remade the sturdy sonnet, recast the sonorous song. He quickened the German language itself. (Rika Lesser - *The Nation*) One of the pillars of twentieth century poetry. (Choice) Poets in English continue to line up for the inevitable failure of translating his [Rilkes] short lyrics. The best translations I have seen are from Babette Deutsch. (Clive James - *Slate*) An important text in the best available translation, presented in an edition nearly as striking as its contents. (David Shook - *Molossus*) Language Notes Text English, German

This book examines the unfolding of the Syrian refugee crisis in relation to the spillover of the Syrian civil war in Lebanon and against the background of LebanonSyria relations and Lebanons socio-political, cultural, legal, and economic conditions. It surveys Lebanons response plans to the refugee crisis as part of the development of the international response plans to address the protection and needs of the Syrian refugees and Palestinian refugees from Syria, as well as the impacted host communities and institutions. At the same time, this book emphasizes the dramatic shift in popular and institutional attitudes towards the refugees as a response to and as a growth of the sheer magnitude of the refugee crisis, which made Lebanon the only country in modern history with the highest per capita concentration of refugees in the world. By examining these attitudes against the background of achievements and failures of the response plans, the impact of the crisis on state institutions on the local and national levels, and the collective consciousness of a nation barely surviving the scars of its civil war, this book not only underscores the deepening tragedy of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, but also the consequential tragedy of many Lebanese, who have been forced into poverty and whose livelihoods have been affected by insecurity and the almost complete collapse of social services. As a result, the tragedy of the Syrian refugee crisis has become an international crisis affecting vulnerable persons across nationalities, and, unless it is addressed diplomatically and its response plans sufficiently funded, the tragedy will only deepen across continents. **

In traditional Chinese culture, the written word, along with the appreciation of it, was prized with an almost religious reverence. Poetry held a place that was unrivaled by any other single art, ability, or practical accomplishment. Poetic talent was a source of prestige and affluence and even of political power. In this rich, comprehensive collection of Chinese poetry, J. P. Seaton, the preeminent American translator and scholar of Chinese literature, introduces the reader to the main styles of Chinese poetry and the major poets, from the classic Shih Ching (The Book of Songs), which dates from 1766 BCE, to the twentieth century. Unlike many academics, Seaton has a poets ear, and his translations here are fresh and vivid. His commentaries on the poems illuminate their historical and stylistic significance.

A startling and gorgeous work by Denmarks most admired poet finally available in English translation. Awarded the American-Scandinavian PEN Translation Prize by Michael Hamburger, Susanna Nieds translation of alphabet introduces Inger Christensens poetry to US readers for the first time. Born in 1935, Inger Christensen is Denmarks best known poet. Her award-winning alphabet is based structurally on Fibonaccis sequence (a mathematical sequence in which each number is the sum of the two previous numbers), in combination with the alphabet. The gorgeous poetry herein reflects a complex philosophical background, yet has a visionary quality, discovering the metaphysical in the simple stuff of everyday life. In alphabet, Christensen creates a framework of psalm-like forms that unfold like expanding universes, while crystallizing both the beauty and the potential for destruction that permeate our times.
