Shorts 000h, Knipex 12 42 195 wire stripper review and Kapton tape mod
In this video we take a quick look at a new set of wire strippers I picked up and a quick and easy way to overcome a shortcoming some of them seem to have. With a simple mod with a few layers of Kapton tape, in just the right places they go from rather hit and hiss strippers to perfectly reliable.

In this video we play amateur chemist and take a look at how to clean up PCBs that have been damaged by leaking alkaline batteries. We have all experienced the horror of opening up a piece of vintage gear that had the AA batteries left in it or which was made with a NiCad battery soldered to the PCB.
Both types of batteries use an electrolyte that is alkaline, it is corrosive but opposite of acids on the Ph scale. I’m not a real chemist, nor do I play one on TV but let’s jump right in and find out how to clean up this sort of mess.
In a future episode we’ll look at how to clean up the mess from leaking electrolytic capacitors whose electrolytes are actually acidic so require a different method to neutralize than the alkaline batteries we dealt with today.

05:35 – Vinegar vs. Citric Acid
09:48 – Liquid Citric Acid vs. gelled Citric Acid

This video started out with a simple mission. To investigate the Suncom 4-button controllers used for ‘The Party Quiz Game’. These odd controllers use the paddle inputs, so this set off a quest to learn how the paddle input worked and how to read them.
Along the way we wind up characterizing the response curve of the SID’s POT inputs, comparing those to the Armsid, discovering a problem with the Armsid POT inputs on a few of the very first PCBs, fixing that with an experimental firmware update. It was a lot of work, and a lot of time spent collecting data, but it was also a lot of fun.
Top finish things off we look at the surprising number of input devices that made use of the POT inputs. Who knew there were so many? Join us…
Timeline:
02:00 – Overview of paddle inputs
03:13 – Design of experiments
08:28 – How the SID works
10:08 – How does the Armsid compare?
12:31 – Testing Suncom controllers

I headed back to Ohio this fall to Tandy Assembly 2022 to partake in all the Tandy centric fun and frivolity. It was a blast again this year; a lot of great presentations, a peek at folks’ collections, projects, swapping parts, etc. I took a few minutes of video to try to give everyone who could not attend a flavor of the event. Hats off to the show organizers who put a lot of time and effort into pulling it off every year.

One problem we often come across when repairing a vintage computer is a bad FFC, a Flat Flex Cable. These cables are made the same way as flexible PCBs but have the contact fingers exposed on the ends and typically some sort of plastic stiffener sheet glued on.
With age the fingers sometimes come loose which leaves your repair stuck until you can locate a good used cable. Many of the cables and connectors they used are no longer available as new replacement parts. So, a damaged cable can leave an otherwise working system out of commission.
Being faced this this problem recently I tried to come up with a way to repair these cables. Join us as we see how it worked out.

In this video we take a look at a ‘patch’ for the ubiquitous Alps plotter mechanism. The most common issue with these lovely plotters is cracked stepper pinion gears, we fixed that previously by installing new, custom made, brass gears. The second most common problem is a cracked hub on the paper feed ‘anti-backlash’ gear. Join us as we find a way to patch this cracked hub up so we can plot again.

Time for another Ferengi Friday where we take a look at all the recent acquisitions in the shop. This week we are cooking up a real vintage treat with a little Commodore, Psion, TRS-80 and other tasty vintage goodness. Remember the 64th Rule of Acquisition: Vintage computers are always a shrewd investment.
So, grab a cup of black coffee or a black hole and join us.

In this video we build an Arduino Mega based tester for TRS-80 M100 SRAM modules. We learn about the unusual SRAM modules the M100 used, a little about RAM testing and then we test some bad modules and attempt a repair.
While this tester was made for a specific purpose the ideas presented can be applied to testing other vintage ICs. The design is open source so download all the files and use it as a starting point for your own tester.

In this video we take a look at some Casio pocket computers in my collection that still needed some sort of TLC. The first order of business was to #GTDBO (Get The Darn Batteries Out), then we’ll concentrate on three different models which have three different issues. We’ll dissect an LCD, build a battery pack, and attempt a internal RAM upgrade. How did we make out? Join us and find out!

Description
In this video we manufacturer a DB23 connector to connect to the Amiga’s video output port. Then we build an adapter to be able to use a normal VGA cable to connect to an Extron DVS-304 video scaler.
Along the way we find out why scaling is needed and finally, we get a nice sharp picture out of the A500 and use a fancy test card video pattern generator to compare the output of the A520 composite adapter and the RGB output, both of which have been processed by the same Extron scaler.
