Commissioned piece by The University of Texas Trombone Choir. They premiered the work at the great University Presbyterian Church on March 6th.
This is a world class ensemble and It was an honor to be ask to compose a piece for them. Special Thanks to the Choir's Director, Dr. Brickens.
This piece means a lot to me, as it was written over difficult times in my personal life. I'm posting the program notes below. Hope you all enjoy it! GS
Filmed by Michael Rey and Erica Fick
Recorded by Kevin Benoit
Program Notes:
This piece is about sorrow. It is about how we feel when someone we really care about is taken from us or simply vanishes. The University of Texas Trombone Choir commissioned me to write the piece, and I also recently scored a version for the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra. The work presents itself as a kind of lament. To be precise, the main theme is a "Lamento Sertanejo" (Hinterland Lament), a type of melody one can find in the country areas of my homeland Brazil. Two episodes from my life moved me to compose this work. The main theme was composed on the day my dear Grandmother Odete Fonsêca passed away. At the same time I had a huge personal disappointment with someone I really thought would make a difference in my life. The first section of the piece is polytonal, as a 4-note ostinato merges with the main theme. The second section presents the main theme in its full tonal modal mixture at a grandioso tempo, and finally the theme fades out, leaving the decrescendo four note ostinato, reduced to one single voice as the piece reaches its conclusion.
