Note: substitute 500m for Visual Line of Sight - Ignore the A3 in front of the A1 and A2 sub categories
******************************************************************************************************
Note: There is a Typo error - Fly Near A2 is WRONG it should be FLY Near A1 - 2nd section intro card
******************************************************************************************************
Open Category Broken down - Note A2 CofC required in some cases - like flying A1 Transitional Aircraft close to uninvolved people -
******************************************************************************************************
A1 Subcategory C0 and C1 aircraft and transitional aircraft - A2 cofc required for transitional aircraft and that will need a flyer ID
******************************************************************************************************
A2 Subcategory C2 aircraft and transitional aircraft
A3 Category Far from People C3 / C4 (non exist yet any way)
- joke is why have a C rating when anything can fly in this category
Note: this covers the general rules - not every little nuance of flying your drone

Network Rail Flight Notifications
We are pleased to inform you of some recent changes to the Drone Operations Platform (DOP) that streamlines the process for notifying Network Rail of planned flights over, or close to, its infrastructure.
When submitting a flight plan through the DOP, users will automatically receive an acknowledgement that Network Rail is aware and has registered the flight.
This approach means users no longer have to wait for their flight notification to be approved. Instead, Network Rail shall monitor flight notifications and undertake random audits with users as deemed necessary. We hope you agree that this is a positive enhancement.
The railway is a dangerous environment for flying drones and the DOP promotes good airmanship by helping with deconfliction.
Since its launch in November 2020, around 2500 flights have been logged and we are grateful to all users for engaging with the process.
It truly is a great and popular system for our drone community and is keeping everyone flying legally and safely.
If you have any suggestion on how the DOP can be improved further or have questions concerning planned flights, then please email: DroneEnquiries@networkrail.co.uk
As ever, we'd like to thank everyone for their continued support and feedback.

where did 250grams come from !
This summary of DJI’s analysis makes for a concise read:

the shrapnel part of the theory came from the MOD here:

it notable that in the wake of this task force meeting DJI, GoPro, Parrot and 3DR chose to leave the Small UAV Coalition as it was clearly not defending the interests of the wider drone community.
