ReBirth RB-338 pioneered a new era of music instrumentation that merged the principles of "virtual reality" with historic synthesizers and drum machines.
ReBirth emulates two Roland TB-303 Bass Line synthesizers, a Roland TR-808 drum machine (since v1.0) and a Roland TR-909 drum machine (since v2.0). All emulations can be used simultaneously. Each of the emulated devices has its own pattern selector, a feature the original devices are lacking. This allows fast switches between different musical sequences, and re-programming the TB-303 for playing different notes, for instance, is rendered unnecessary. This feature has been adopted in some of Reason's devices. ReBirth also features mixers, a pattern controlled filter (PCF) and some of the standard effects in software synthesizers like delay, compressor and distortion.
The program also supports user modifications, which may replace the samples in the drum machine emulations and modify the GUI. There are four modifications included in the ReBirth installation by default (though the default ReBirth GUI seems to count as a modification as well).
The virtual knobs and controls can be assigned to physical counterparts via MIDI, so knobs, modulation wheels, faders and other performance controls available on keyboards and modules can be used to shape the software sound.

FILTER Section
The filter section is located at the top left.
CUT (Cutoff)
Adjusts the Filter cutoff frequency. The keyboard track ("KB TRACK") button makes the cutoff frequency dependent on the actual note played - higher notes mean higher cutoff, lower notes means lower cutoff.
RES (resonance)
Adjusts the Filter resonance.
ENV (envelope amount)
The amount the filter cutoff frequency is affected by the Filter ADSR.
Filter Type
The 6 green buttons select the filter type - you have the following choices:
LP[fat] - 24 dB low-pass filter
LP+NOTCH - 12 dB low-pass + notch cascade
DBL NOTCH - double notch-filter
BP - 24 dB band-pass filter
HP - 24 dB high-pass filter.
OSC Section
The oscillator section is located at the middle of the top. The first 2 wheels, CRS and FINE, are the coarse and finetuning of oscillator 1. Coarse tuning is adjustable in the range -3/+3 octaves, finetuning in -1/+1 semitone. The green buttons below set the oscillator shape, which is sawtooth by default. Oscillator 1 additionally has a FAT knob, which creates a richer spectrum and is good for pad or lead sounds. The slider between OSC1 and OSC2 adjust the mix ratio of the oscillators. When it's slid fully towards OSC1, oscillator 2 won't be audible.
Oscillator 3 plays 1 octave below oscillator 1. The AMT (Amount) wheel sets it's volume, which is zero (inaudible) by default. Osc 3 has only 2 shapes, sawtooth (default) or square.
The PW (Pulse Width) button only has effect when at least one of the oscillators is set to the square shape (the 2nd shape). It shortens 1 of the square flanks, thus making the sound thinner. At the very left position (default) it has no effect.
The FM (Frequency Modulation) button modulates the frequency of oscillator 2 with the output of oscillator 1. To hear the effect, set the osc mix slider to the right (OSC2). Classic FM uses sinewaves (the 3rd oscillator shape), other waveforms may give noisy or strange results.
LFO-1 Section
LFO-1 can modulate the pitch of the output ("OSC1+2"), the filter cutoff frequency ("FILTER") or the Pulse Width ("PW"). The SYNC button synchronizes the frequency of the LFO to a multiple of the current tempo. RESET sets the LFO to the beginning of the LFO waveform (Phase=0) when a note is triggered. Above the AMT and SPD wheels, the LFO waveform can be set (default is a sinewave).

This instrument models a grand piano and is based on high-quality stereo samples of a real acoustic piano. Three knobs give hands-on control of the key parameters. Note that the Acoustic Grand module fully supports the sustain pedal when played via a MIDI keyboard. For this to work properly, make sure that the "Sustain Pedal" switch is ON (under "Options/MIDI In Settings").

Sound Parameters
The Brightness control adjusts the timbre of the piano sound. Note that the timbre is dependent on velocity as well- just like in a real piano.
Use the Release knob to set the decay of the piano tone. This only has an effect if the sustain pedal is not depressed.
A Chorus effect adds a delayed copy of the tone to the outgoing signal, creating a wider stereo image and a thicker sound. Using this knob, you can control the depth of this effect. Set the knob to zero to turn off the chorus effect completely.

As introduced above, Dream Station consists of a highly versatile synthesizer module with 96 oscillators/32 voices, a 32 track step-time sequencer, dual stereo FX processing and an eight channel stereo mixer.
Up to three oscillators can be used for each voice, where every oscillator is generating sine, triangle, sawtooth, pulse (OSC2&3 square) or noise waveforms. Linear frequency modulation, ring modulation and hard synchronization are available between OSC1&2. You may replace the traditional waveforms with 16 bit mono samples, and use them as the source of ring and frequency modulation. A multimode filtering architecture is responsible for eliminating/exciting specified frequencies of the generated signal by supporting 2 pole lowpass, bandpass, highpass, 4 pole lowpass and formant filter modes. All this is controlled by the "easy-to-use" 32 tracks step-time sequencer. The "enter the notes and enjoy Your music" system makes it powerful by its simplicity, so the composer can easily track any actions/events (such as filter sweeping, retriggering, mixer programming, instrument selecting) step by step. This built-in sequencer is synchronizable to external MIDI clock.
Dream Station comes with its own virtual MIDI ports (In & Out), so you can use it with your favorite MIDI sequencer, like if it would be a hardware synthesizer, sound module or sound card. Every knob, switch, toggle and slider has got its own individual MIDI controller, letting you record and "remote" Dream Station by any external MIDI sequencer.
