A nice February wintery ride across the farm on a 1951 John Deere model A with my nephew. It's a great way to enjoy a little sunshine and let the dogs run around for a bit. Plus, after a long winter, it's fun spending some seat time on the old two-cylinder Deere. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J-V5JtJxcY
This is a video I took this morning when I went out to catch the nice light and frost on the trees. The temperature was about -10ยบ F. It hasn't bee a real cold winter, but the little cold we've had has been enough to start freezing up the river. This is the salt river that runs through Star Valley, Wyoming and dumps into the Snake River.

Our ground here is very rocky, and our winters aren't easy on it too... Lots of mounds from rodents and such. Because of this, we cultivate the alfalfa ground in the springtime. This pushes down the rocks, smooths out the ground, and removes the top layer of organic material that was pressed on the top layer from the snow. This allows the new alfalfa to come up easier and healthier.

A few years ago I purchased a 1960 John Deere 435 tractor. The 435 is a unique tractor in that it used a General Motors (GM) two-stroke diesel engine (later called Detroit Diesel). The engine in the 435 is the GM 2-53, which has two-cylinders at 53 CI each. The GM/Detroit engines had a very unique sound to them, as they have a power stroke each revolution of the engine. Mr. Thinker from the "Green Magazine" calls it a chainsaw on wheels... I think there's a lot of truth to that! More details on the engine can be found online, as there are several websites that into the operation of the engine in good details.
This engine in this tractor needs to be rebuilt, which is why I haven't used it a whole lot nor had it out often in the past few years. I hope to do it either this winter or next spring, depending on how things go...
In this video I do a little explanation of the tractor, then I take it out for a short drive down to my grandparents and back. I think the wheels were pretty cold and stiff, as you could feel the flat spot where it had been sitting all winter each time it went around. Hopefully that didn't make the video too bumpy :)

The snow is unusually low this year, which is bad for water and bad for snowmobiles. However, it's great for driving the tractors through the fields! Today was especially warm, which makes it easier for them to drive through (wet snow is easier to push through than cold snow).
This video is of a John Deere 420 Utility with under exhaust. It's also the first video I've done completely in Linux, using kdenlive video editing software.
