Mountain Photography in Winter - Exploring The Cairngorms. Out backpacking and wild camping for some more landscape photography whilst having an overnight camp in the snow. I decided to head into the Scottish Cairngorms as I knew there may be the opportunity to photograph some of the old Scots pines as well as trying my hand later in the evening at some Astro photography. This was a great chance to try out my new Nikon D810 camera and also let you see my new tent I have been using. Having parked at the Linn of Dee carpark I headed off through the Cairngorms and up towards the Hutchison Memorial Bothy for an overnight camp. Trying the Terra Nova Southern Cross One for some winter backpacking and overnight camping during the winter. Decided to go wild camping in the 'Eastern Mamores' in Scotland, not far from Kinlochleven. T his area and trip has been on my to do list for ages. Was just waiting on slightly better weather window before deciding to go and explore. The new 'Terra Nova Southern Cross 1' tent on this trip has been designed for 4 season use and just out on the market for 2016. So decided to put it through its paces at fairly high altitude in snowy and freezing Scottish mountains. So watch along to see how I felt it performed. I do cover some of the possible negatives to this design and size of tent. The location was amazing and looked like something from the set of 'Game of Thrones' and was just waiting on the 'White Walkers' to appear. Although filmed in full 4K as usual, the 'GoPro Hero 4' does not do the vast scale of the scenery or how I was really viewing the experience any justice. Even in summer, conditions can be atrocious; thick fog, strong winds, driving rain and freezing summit temperatures are commonplace. Walking and hiking in the Scottish mountains & hills can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk. Hazards you may encounter include: Open moorland Terrain, few distinct landmarks, Difficult navigation. Crags and steep drops near summits. Boggy areas. River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day. Snow and ice on summits even in early summer. Sudden changes in weather conditions. Temperature decreases by 1 degree C for every 100m of ascent. Note: You are responsible for your own safety. Are you fit enough to complete your chosen walk in the available time? Ensure you have the correct clothing for the changeable Scottish weather. Know where you are going on the walk and follow the route on your map. At the very least carry a map & compass, survival bag, torch, whistle and small first aid kit. Ensure you have enough food plus emergency rations. Cold temperatures will reduce the life of your batteries. In severe winter conditions you must carry an ice axe. You are also recommended to carry crampons. Landscape photography trip exploring, Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides. This is a short Vlog of our 4 day holiday and landscape photography trip to the 'Outer Hebrides' in Scotland, and in particular exploring stunning locations across the ‘Isle of Lewis & Harris’. We spent a couple of days on the ‘Isle of Skye’ before heading across and encountered wild fires on the hillside and at one point thought we would be evacuated due to the severity of the fires. The islands are a mecca for landscape photographers and having seen so many images from locations across the island that we just had to go and experience them for ourselves. One of the benefits of car camping is the ability to have a fairly cheap holiday break without breaking the bank balance. We stayed at the campsite ‘Eilean Fraoich’ which had good facilities and gave us a good base point to go out and explore the many sites we had planned to see. We visited many more locations that did not make it into the Vlog due to time constraints and also the fact it was our holiday. But I do hope however this short amount of footage captured gives a taste and feel for what a special place this is to visit. The ‘Calanais Standing Stones’ are magical to visit but very busy this time of year with tourists. Much the same happened at ‘Neist Point Lighthouse’ on Skye which meant we could not get parked and could hardly move due to the vast numbers descending on the places. My goal will be to revisit these places later in the year or even in winter. I would like to say that driving on the island is a great experience and not overly busy with cars, and all the roads are in excellent condition and never seen one single pothole during our trip. Early summer overnight wild camping trip walking out from the 'Bridge of Orchy' to our camp spot next to 'Loch Dochard'. This was a long time coming pre-arranged meet up with, Jim - 'Bored Man Outdoors'. Also the chance to have a couple of beers, chat about all things wild camping and YouTube at one of Scotland's most accessible yet remote locations. Later joined by, Murray - 'Scotland Mountains' where we shared stories, midge repellent and coated peanuts long into the night. The morning was amazing with mist across the Loch making this a particularly special wild camp.
