Se evita repetir las preposiciones in, at, to, etc. cuando al menos dos expresiones están unidas por or (o). Por ejemplo las preposiciones que se indican entre paréntesis en las frases siguientes son innecesarias, por lo que se puede prescindir de ellas:
Is he at school or (at) university? - ¿Está en el colegio o en Ia universidad?
She isn't in the bank or (in) the chemist. - (Ella) no está en el banco ni en la farmacia.
I think she's gone to Paris or (to) Rome. - Creo que se ha ido a París o a Roma.
He isn't at the theatre, (at) the cinema or (at) the concert. - (Él) no está ni en el teatro, ni en el cine ni en el concierto.
Sin embargo, hay que mantener at en at home/at work:
They're not at school or at home.- No están ni en la escuela ni en casa.
They're not at home or at work. - No están ni en casa ni en el trabajo.

Para preguntar cuánto se tarda en llegar a algún sitio, o hacer algo, se utiliza How long... con el verbo take, que en este caso se traduce por 'tardar/llevar'. En este construcción it se utiliza como 'sujeto vacío'. Fíjese en que después del verbo take se utiliza infinitivo con to de otro verbo:
How long did it take him to get there? - ¿Cuánto tardó (él) en llegar allí?
Oh, it took him nearly a month. - Oh, le llevó (a él) casi un mes.
How long does it take to get to Paris? - ¿Cuánto se tarda en llegar a París?
It takes about an hour. - Se tarda alrededor de una hora.
También se puede utilizar el verbo que expresa el medio de transporte:
How long does it take to fly to Milan? - ¿Cuánto se tarda en volar a Milan?
It took them 3 hours to drive to London. - Les llevó tres horas conducir hasta Londres.
Recuerde que en vez de utlizar un verbo, se puede utilizar la preposición by delante de muchos medios de transporte:
How long does it take by train? - ¿Cuánto se tarda en tren?
I don't know. It takes two days by car. - No sé. Se tarda dos días en coche.
La construcción from... to... (desde... hasta...) también se utiliza para referirse a lugares:
How long does it take to walk from Bath to Liverpool?
¿Cuánto tiempo se tarda en caminar desde Bath hasta Liverpool?
It took us nearly half an hour by bicycle from Langrish to Petersfield.
Nos llevó casi media hora en bicicleta desde Langrish hasta Petersfield.
Cuando expresa duración, el verbo take puede utilizarse tanto para referirse a lo que tarda una persona en hacer algo como a lo que dura el viaje en sí:
It took an hour by car. - Tardó una hora en coche.
Jane took three hours to get here. - Jane tardó tres horas en llegar aquí.
It took him half an hour to walk. - Le llevó (a él) una hora andando.
Por lo tanto se utiliza el verbo take seguido por el infinitivo con to de otros verbos para indicar el tiempo que se emplea en una actividad. Observe de nuevo que it puede utilizarse como sujeto 'vacio':
He took three hours to make lunch. - (Él) tardó tres horas en hacer el almuerzo.
It won't take me a year to learn English. - No me llevará un año aprender inglés.
Did it take them long to find jobs? - ¿Les llevó mucho tiempo encontrar empleos?

Al llamar por teléfono una forma habitual de preguntar por alguien sería utilizando el verbo modal can, o como hemos visto, utilizando el verbo modal could como una fórmula más cortés:
Can I speak to Sean Combs, please? - ¿Puedo hablar con Sean Combs, por favor?
Could I speak to Mr Combs, please? - ¿Podría hablar con el Sr. Combs, por favor?
Si la persona que contesta no es aquella por la que se pregunta, seguramente le responderá con expresiones similares a las siguientes:
Certainly! - ¡Desde luego!
Just a moment, please. - Un momento, por favor.
I'm afraid he isn't here. -- Me temo que no está.
Hold on a minute, please. - Aguarde un momento, por favor.
Who's calling, please? - ¿Quién le llama, por favor?
Si contesta directamente la persona por la que se prequnta, su respuesta podría ser:
Ben Todd speaking. - Ben Todd al habla.
o simplemente:
Speaking.
En los siguientes ejemplos el que llama quiere comprobar si ha contactado con la persona deseada:
Is that Ben Todd?
Yes, this is Ben Todd speaking.
Observe dos maneras para decir a alguien que tiene una llamada telefónica (call), utilizando There's... o it's.... Fíjese en que la preposición for va seguida de un pronombre personal objeto (me/you):
There's a call for you. - Hay una llamada para tí.
For me? - ¿Para mí?
Yes. It's for you. -- Sí. Es para tí.

Recuerde que no se utiliza will para lo que ya se ha organizado o decidido previamente hacer en un futuro, sino que se utiliza el 'Present Continuous' con significado de futuro:
He is arriving tomorrow evening. - (Él) llega por la noche.
Are they going out this evening? - ¿Salen esta noche?
En inglés hay otra manera de expresar el futuro con intención premeditada, que se conoce como el futuro con be going to. Este tiempo se construye con el 'Present Continuous' del verbo go seguido del infinitivo con to del verbo principal.
sujeto + be + going + to infinitivo
I am (not) going to ...
you are (not) going to ...
he is (not) going to ...
she is (not) going to ...

He´s going to arrive tomorrow. We are going to wait for him.

INTERROGATIVA
Recuerde que se invierte el orden entre el verbo auxiliar be y el sujeto:
be + sujeto + going + to infinitivo

When is he going to make dinner? What are they going to wear?

Recuerde que cuando el verbo go (ir) implica movimimiento, siempre va seguido por la preposición de movimiento to:

Shall we go to church? -¿Vamos a Ia iglesia?
Una excepción es ir a casa' que, aunque indica movimiento, no utiliza la preposición:

Como vimos, el verbo modal can se utiliza para expresar ideas funcionales como 'poder' o 'saber' hacer algo:
I can touch my toes. - Puedo tocar los dedos de mis pies.
They can ride very well. - Saben montar (a caballo) muy bien.
Recuerde que cuando un verbo va seguido por otro verbo, en muchos casos el segundo verbo es un infinitivo con to:
I prefer to go out at the weekend. - Prefiero salir los fines de semana.
They need to buy some milk. - Necesitan comprar algo de leche.
I want to see a film. - Quiero ver una película.
Recuerde también que para preguntar y responder sobre lo que a alguien le gustaría hacer se utiliza would like con la misma construcción, es decir, seguido por un infinitivo con to:
would + like + `to infinitivo´
What would you like to do? - ¿Qué te gustaría hacer?
I'd like to stay at home tonight. - Me gustaría quedarme en casa esta noche.
Where would they like to go? - ¿Dónde les gustaría ir?
They'd like to go to the beach. - Les gustaría ir a la playa.
Como todos los verbos modales, can carece de un `infinitivo con to´, por lo que no se puede utilizar can después de would like para expresar que a uno gustaría poder o saber hacer algo.
En estos casos, en vez de can, se tiene que utilizar la forma verbal be able que si puede formar un 'infinitivo con to', y que a su vez, siempre va seguido por otro inifinitivo con to:
would like + to be able + `to infinitivo´
I'd like to be able to hear the music. - Me gustaría poder oír música.
She would like to be able to go home. - (A ella) le gustaría poder ir a casa.
They'd like to be able to drive. - Les gustaría saber conducir.
Observe la diferencia entre los siguientes significados:
would + like + to be able to = el deseo de saber o poder hacer algo
I´d like to be able to play outside. - Me gustaría poder jugar fuera.
He'd like to be able to get up late. - (A él) le gustaría poder levantarse tarde.
We´d like to be able to swim. - Nos gustaría saber nadir.
would + like + `to infinitivo´ = el deseo de hacer algo
I'd like to play chess tonight. - Me gustaría jugar al ajedrez esta noche.

En inglés, para decir que se tiene hambre o sed se utiliza el verbo be (ser o estar) seguido del adjetivo apropriado, hungry (hambriento), thirsty (sediento).
Naturalmente también se utiliza el verbo be en la pregunta:
be + adjetivo
Are you hungry, Donald? - ¿Tienes hambre, Donald?
Yes, I am. - Sí.
And are you thirsty? - ¿Y tienes sed?
No, I'm not thirsty at all. - No, no tengo sed en absoluto.
Para intensificar el grado de hambre o sed se utiliza very (muy) o quite (bastante):
I'm very hungry. What´s for lunch? - Tengo mucha hambre. ¿Qué hay para comer?
He's quite thirsty. - (Él) tiene bastante sed.
Para ofrecerse a satisfacer el hambre o la sed de alguien se puede preguntar con el verbo want, aunque una forma más cortés con el `modal verb´ would seguido del verbo like:
Do you want a drink? - Lit.: ¿Quieres una bebida?
Would you like a sandwich? - ¿Te gustaría un sandwich?
Recuerde cómo se utilizan las formas some/something en frases afirmativas, y
any/anything en frases negativas e interrogativas:
I'd like some water, please. - Me gustaría algo de agua, por favor
Do you want any apples? - ¿Quieres algunas manzanas?
I don't want anything for dinner. - No quiero nada para cenar.
Las reglas anteriores tienen una excepción en el caso de ofrecimientos en las que se espera que la persona acepte oferta. En este caso se puede utilizar las formes some/something aun siendo en frases interrogativas:
Would you like some potatoes? - ¿Querrías algunas patatas?
Would you like some apple pie? - ¿Querrías algo de tarta de manzana?
Do you want something hot for lunch? - ¿Quieres algo caliente para almorzar?
Fíjese en que cuando las palabras something y anything van seguidas por un verbo, éste tiene que ser un infinitivo con to:
Do you want anything to eat? - ¿Quieres algo de comer?
No, but I'd like something to drink. - No, pero me gustaría algo de beber.
Como hemos visto en unidades anteriores se puede, hacer ofrecimientos utilizando Shall I/we...?:
Shall I get you another drink? - ¿Te traigo otra copa?
Shall I make you some tea? - ¿Te hago un té?
Shall we have something to eat? - ¿Comemos algo?
Shall we bring you some food? - ¿Te traemos algo de comida?

Una forma habitual de saludar es mediante una pregunta:
How are you - ¿Cómo está Vd.? / ¿Cómo estás?
Este saludo puede hacerse a continuación de otros:
Good morning. How are you? - Buenas días, ¿Cómo está Vd.?
Hi Arturo! How are you? - Hola, Arturo. ¿Cómo estás?
Es una pregunta y por lo tanto require una respuesta. Una respuesta familiar habitual es:
I´m fine, thanks. - Estoy bien, gracias.
o simplemente:
Fine, thanks. - Bien, gracias.
Una respuesta más cortés es:
Very well, thank you. - Muy bien, gracias.
Normalmente a la respuesta se añade una repetición de la pregunta ´How are you?´ , que se abrevia, familiarmente, a ´And you?´ (¿Y Vd.?). En general, hay que utilizar más palabras cuanto más formal es la situación. Por ejemplo:
INFORMAL
- Hello, Mary. How are you?
- Fine, thanks. And you?
- Fine, thanks.
FORMAL
- Hello, Ms Proctor. How are you?
- Very well, thank you. How are you?
- Very well, thank you.
La expression ´How do you do?´ es una manera más educada de saludar cuando se conoce a alguien por primera vez. Aunque es una pregunta, no se da una respuesta.
Simplemente se repite el saludo:
-How do you do?
-How do you do?
Si no conoce a la otra persona, puede presentarse dando su nombre:
How do you do? I´m Bob Proctor.
O puede añadir el nombre de la otra persona:
- How do you do, Mr Vitale? I´m Bob Proctor.
