Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin Walkthrough On Linux Part 7 Huntsman Copse & Chariot - Proton
A full commentary walkthrough of Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin played on Linux using Steam Proton.
In this episode I head into Huntman Copse, defeat the Executioner Chariot, join the Blue Sentinels covenant and encounter the Forlorn for the first time.
Executioner Chariot Boss Fight
The hardest part of this fight is getting past the skeletons and killing the necromancers, as it is possible to get stun locked by them thus allowing the chariot to finish you off.
Once the gate is down, it is just you and the horse, so bait a heavily telegraphed attack from the boss and retaliate when you get an opening.
Rinse and repeat, the boss does not have that much health so should be defeated fairly quickly.
This episode was recorded at 1080p 60fps using the NVENC encoder in OBS Studio on Kubuntu 20.10 and then rendered to 1440p using Kdenlive.

Now if you are not familiar with Pop OS, it is an Ubuntu based distribution developed by System 76 that has several gaming tweaks that are enabled out of the box.
They also provide two ISOs, one for AMD / Intel hardware and one for nVidia hardware, so choose the one that matches your hardware and it will install the latest available driver at point of installation and keep it updated through updates.
STEP 1: INSTALL WINE STAGING
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

STEP 2: INSTALL FERAL GAMEMODE
sudo apt install gamemode
STEP 3: INSTALL STEAM AND ENABLE PROTON AND GAMEMODE FOR ALL GAMES
sudo apt install steam
To enable Proton for all games, navigate to Steam / Settings / Steam Play / Advanced and tick the Enable Steam Play for all other titles, and restart to apply this setting.
To enable Gamemode for a game, click on the Properties of a game, navigate to SET LAUNCH OPTIONS and type in gamemoderun %command%.
STEP 4: INSTALL LUTRIS AND ENABLE GAMEMODE FOR ALL GAMES
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lutris-team/lutris
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lutris
To enable it to work with Gamemode, then navigate to Preferences / System options / Command prefix and type in gamemoderun, and once done, click Save.
Please note that you will need to tick the show advanced options to see the Command prefix option.

Download and install the latest version of the free or portable version from the developer's website.
2. Using Revo Uninstaller.
The application layout is simple, right click on an entry on the left and select uninstall.
First, you will be prompted to create a system restore point, and then the built-in application uninstaller will begin.
Once this has finished, you have an option of choosing Safe, Moderate, or Advanced scanning modes, I recommend selecting Advanced and then clicking the Scan button.
First you will be presented with a list of registry entries, click the Select All button and then Delete to remove them.
Do the same for the list of files and folders, once again click Select All and then Delete to remove them.

* Progression is much less linear. There are now options to travel between different routes in-map, linking up the world.
* Enemies and bosses have been changed, in strength, abilities and placement.
* New bosses have been added.
* New classes and gifts have been added.
* Mechanics have been altered, such as reinforcement, which has been removed.
* Numerous new features have been added, such as new options at bonfires, new covenant offering system, Curse and Mark system, etc.
* Many weapons and armor sets have been added and placed in the world is a sensible fashion.

In this video I give my thoughts on Windows, and why I still dual boot it alongside Linux on my desktop.
My Main Reasons Why I Still Use Windows
1. Windows offers 99% compatibility with my game library, and I have many games that perform worse on Linux, the majority of these been DirectX 12 games, plus I have some games that do not work at all on Linux.
2. Since Windows 7, I have not experienced Windows rot, BSODs or malware infections and although Windows 10 and 11 have telemetry, I have no real objection to it.
3. My initial experience of Windows 11 has been positive although I am disappointed that direct storage and Android support was not available on day one.
In conclusion, Windows is probably the best operating system on the PC platform, and is nowhere as bad as some people make it out to be.

This video discusses what Lutris, and how you can use Lutris scripts to install it and run games that cannot be typically run using Steam Proton.
Usually these are ones that are exclusive to platforms such as EA Origin, Blizzard Battle.net, GOG or Epic Game Stores.
The majority of the time, the installation process is automatic, and any additional dependencies required for running both the platform and the game will be installed as part of the script.
In fact the only interaction that you may have to do is to sign in to the platform or run through the installation wizard.
It should be noted that Lutris will not work with games that typically use anti-cheat, DRM and custom launchers such as the Rock Star Launcher.
Which means that games such as Destiny 2, Fortnite, and Red Dead Redemption 2 will still not work on Linux using Lutris.
To use Lutris, you must ensure you have installed the latest version of Wine including additional dependencies and the latest driver for you GPU that supports DXVK / Vulkan.
Depending on your distribution, there will be different methods for doing this, so see below for installation instructions from the Lutris wiki.

Curse Rotted Greatwood Boss Fight
The only weak spots this boss has are the egg sacks, which take extra damage from fire, so Pyromancy or a Fire enchanted weapon are recommended, luckily both of these can be found in the Undead Settlement.
A full walkthrough of Dark Souls III, including all it’s DLC content, played entirely on Linux.
This series is recorded using OBS and played on Manjaro Linux KDE Edition.

This video covers setting up Manjaro Linux for gaming using no terminal commands, but instead using GUI tools such as Pamac, Hardware Configuration, and Kernel Manager.
Step 1 - Update system using the Software Update application.
It is good practice to reboot after updating any system modules.
Step 2 - Install the latest nVidia GPU driver using Hardware Configuration application.
Make sure to update the system before installing nVidia drivers, and reboot after installing a driver to apply it.
Step 3 - Update Linux kernel to a newer version.
This will be required to support new AMD GPUs.
Step 4 - Install Wine, Lutris, and Feral Gamemode using Add/Remove Software application.
I recommend installing Wine Staging, gamemode, and lib32-gamemode.
Reboot the system to allow the Gamemode daemon to start at boot.
Step 5 - Install Steam - this is preinstalled in Manjaro.,

In this video I show you how to install and use the KDE Plasma desktop environment alongside Gnome on Ubuntu 20.10.
Some Considerations
The process of installing and using multiple desktop environments is relatively straightforward, but there are a couple of things to consider before doing so.
First, I would strongly recommend creating a separate user account for each desktop environment, and the reason for that is that often themes or config files for desktop environments are stored on a user-by-user basis.
Secondly, many desktop environments will have their own default applications, for example having KDE Plasma and Gnome installed will mean you will now have two separate Terminal emulators in Konsole and Terminal respectively.
Finally, applications developed in one environment will look odd in another, for example installing Kdenlive which is developed using QT on Ubuntu using Gnome will look out of place.
Update Your System
I recommend that before you install any desktop environment, you have completely updated your system.
You can do that with the following Terminal command:
sudo apt install && sudo apt upgrade -y
Reboot once done.
Installing A Different Desktop Environment
KDE Plasma can be installed with the following Terminal command:
sudo apt install kde-standard
Alternatively, for Mate:
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment mate-desktop-environment-extras ubuntu-mate-themes
For Cinnamon:
sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment
And for XFCE, it will be:
sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies
When prompted to choose a display manager, I recommend you stick with the Gnome Display Manager.
Once the process is complete, reboot your system.
Logging into A Different Desktop Environment
To sign into a different desktop environment, click on the gear icon, and select one from the list, for example, to use the KDE Plasma desktop environment, choose the plasma option, and then sign into your user account as normal.
Removing Desktop Environments
If you decide later that you want to remove a desktop environment, this can be done in a couple of Terminal commands.
For example, to remove KDE Plasma on Ubuntu based distributions, you would use the following two commands:
sudo apt purge kde-*
sudo apt autoremove

Step 1 - Install Latest Driver for Your GPU
This can be done multiple ways, but depending on your distribution, you will usually have some form of GUI tool that handles this task for you.

Alternatively, you can use the Terminal.
For example, for Ubuntu distributions with nVidia hardware, use the following Terminal commands in sequence:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-460
sudo apt install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386
reboot
Step 2 – Install Steam and Enable Proton
Steam can be installed through your distribution’s package manager, either using a GUI tool or through the Terminal.
For example, on Ubuntu based distribution, it is the following command:
sudo apt install steam
Once installed, launch Steam, apply any updates and sign into your account.
By default, you will not be able to install the game it is has not been officially whitelisted by Valve as Proton compatible.
But this can be overwritten by navigating to Steam / Steam Play / Advanced, ticking the Enable Steam Play for all other titles, and selecting the latest version of Proton.
Reboot Steam once done.
To fix the cutscenes, we need to use a custom version of Proton.

I recommend Glorious Eggroll’s Proton-GE build, which can be downloaed from the Release tab on the right-hand side.
Scroll down to the latest release, and download and extract the tar.gz archive, and once this archive is extracted, make a copy of the Proton-GE folder.
Next open up your Home directory, and enable Hidden files, navigate to. steam / root and create a new folder called compatibilitytools.d, and inside this folder, paste the Proton-GE folder you copied earlier.
Restart Steam if still open, and now when you right click on the Properties of the game and choose the Compatibility tab, you can tick the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select the Proton-GE build from the list.
