The University of Alabama is renaming a building after its first Black student. removing the name of a Klansman
(CNN)After a week of backlash. the University of Alabama System's Board of Trustees voted Friday to name a building after the school's first Black student instead of having her share the name with a Ku Klux Klan leader. The trustees reversed a February 3 decision to name the building Lucy Graves Hall after its first Black student and civil rights activist Autherine Lucy Foster and Bibb Graves. a former Alabama governor and a Ku Klux Klan leader. Students. faculty and community members cried out. saying it was wrong to recognize the legacy of these two people in one building. 'This has been a challenging time. The work group in making its recommendations certainly intended for that paired name to generate educational moments that can help us learn from our complex and rich history.' trustee emeritus Judge John England Jr. said at the special called Friday meeting. 'Somehow. the honoring of Autherine Lucy Foster sort of took the background and that's not what we wanted.' England said. 'We've heard enough from people whose opinion matter to us students. faculty. staff that we can do that in a better way than what we've done.' The working group for the board consulted with more than a dozen Alabama history scholars before suggesting the name of Lucy Graves Hall. the university system said in a news release. However. students and others on campus were not consulted. The...

Faulty ballots and frustration: Texans confront 'nightmare' effects of new election law as early voting kicks off
(CNN)For Houston area retiree Pam Gaskin. voting is a ritual that starts every January when she completes her application for an absentee mail ballot. This year. the 74 year old printed the application on January 3. filled it out and mailed it to her local election office. Days later. a rejection letter arrived: The forms she had pulled from the county's website no longer complied with Texas law. So. she tried again using the new form. which required her to submit a Texas identification number or partial Social Security number. But it. too. was rejected. The problem this time: She had submitted her driver's license number. but it didn't match the identification she used 46 years ago when she first registered to vote after moving to Fort Bend County. 'I am mad as hell.' said Gaskin. who grew up watching her father pay poll taxes for himself and other African Americans in Galveston County so they could vote. 'These are the things we fought 60 years ago. 50 years ago. and we are still fighting them. And that is not right.' Gaskin is among the Texans ensnared in the Lone Star State's restrictive new voting law. passed by the Republican controlled legislature last year. It imposes a raft of changes in a state that already had some of the strictest voting regulations in the country. As early voting kicks off in the state on Monday. election officials and voters alike are...

Senate Republicans boycott committee vote on Biden’s Fed nominees
Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee declined to show up Tuesday for votes on President Biden’s nominees to the Federal Reserve over their objection to one of the choices — delaying the confirmation of Fed Chair Jerome Powell to a second four year term. Though Democrats have nominal control of the panel in the evenly divided Senate. the GOP absences prevented a quorum from being called and the votes from taking place. The boycott was led by Sen. Pat Toomey (R Pa.). the committee’s ranking member. who said that Sarah Bloom Raskin — Biden’s pick to be the Fed’s top banking regulator — had not sufficiently answered questions about her work as a board member at financial technology firm Reserve Trust. Toomey claimed last week that Raskin had improperly lobbied the Kansas City Fed on behalf of Reserve Trust in 2017 in order to secure the company access to the central bank’s payment system. Raskin said during her confirmation hearing earlier this month that she did not recall doing so. but added that if she had. “I would have abided by all applicable ethics rules in such communications.” “Until basic questions have been adequately addressed. I do not think the Committee should proceed with a vote on Ms. Raskin.” Toomey said in a statement Tuesday. “Important questions about Ms. Raskin’s use of the ‘revolving door’ remain unanswered largely because of her repeated disingenuousness.” the lawmaker said. referring to Raskin’s prior tenure as a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors and deputy Treasury secretary during the Obama administration. “Her fitness to serve. her judgment. and her probity are of utmost importance because Ms. Raskin is being considered for a 10 year term at the nation’s independent central bank and foremost financial regulator.” Toomey went on. The Pennsylvanian added that Republicans were willing to vote on Biden’s four other nominees. including Powell. but were not willing to proceed on the Raskin pick. Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown (D Ohio) said Republicans had opted to “abdicate their duty to the American people.” “End the theatrics and show up to do your jobs.” he said on Twitter. At the White House. press secretary Jen Psaki said Toomey and his fellow Republicans were being “irresponsible” with the boycott. “It’s never been more important to have confirmed leadership at the Fed to help continue our recovery and fight inflation.” she told reporters. “And obviously. they have a unique role to play. an important. vital role to play as it relates to inflation. And I think Democrats and Republicans have agreed on that for decades. So Republicans are out there saying. ‘Inflation is a pr

Easter SCOTUS confirmation in doubt as Biden deliberates
“The president is still interviewing.” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D Ill.). chair of the Judiciary Committee. in an interview Monday. | Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images By Marianne LeVine and Burgess Everett 02/14/2022 03:11 PM EST Updated: 02/14/2022 07:29 PM EST Senate Democratic leaders are racing to confirm President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court pick before Easter. That timeline could get murky. particularly if Biden picks a nominee who has never been through the Judiciary Committee. Biden may begin interviews with potential candidates as early as this week. though senators are not anticipating him to announce his choice imminently. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer disclosed plans to retire nearly three weeks ago. and Democrats are eager to begin reviewing his replacement. A nominee this week “would be optimal. but not likely.” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D Ill.). chair of the Judiciary Committee. in an interview Monday. “The president is still interviewing.” If Biden names a nominee who has not been processed through committee. such as California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger. he would likely need to name that pick this week to meet the self imposed Easter deadline. according to a staffer familiar with the matter. Durbin said Monday that “clearly” it will take longer to vet Kruger since. unlike other top contenders such as...
