"...Perhaps more alarming than HB 135 passing out of committee, Rep. Keven Stratton - chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, announced a new bill to pass a Constitutional Amendment that would change the State’s constitution to allow a city to dispose of its water rights. Stratton’s bill, H.J.R 15, is driven by the same speculators behind Noel’s HB 135. The bill starts the process to amend Utah’s constitution to allow a municipality to lease its water, a practice currently not allowed in Utah. This is what speculators have been after the whole time! Whether they realize it or not, the Utah Legislature is doing the bidding of a handful of speculators – see the image below - trying to raise their land values and develop in our watershed regardless of the damage to public drinking water.

On HB 135 alone you sent over 7,000 emails to legislators. That is an amazing show of support, but did they respond? No, they fast tracked this bill out of committee. They ignored the Executive Water Taskforce’s recommendation to study the issue. They lobbed unfounded and misinformed allegations against Salt Lake City Public Utilities directors who have worked to ensure we can have access to amazing recreation opportunities and high quality drinking water in the arid west. Did they allow those public servants to defend themselves? For the bill’s presentation, twenty minutes were spent on baseless allegations while water directors and the bill’s opponents were only allotted ninety seconds to respond.

We will continue to unravel what appears to be orchestrated affront on your drinking water. As this moves along our GRAMA requests are curiously being denied. Despite all of this, we remain undeterred,"
