My Personal Methods of Cutting Clean Turns on the Scroll Saw
In this video I try to demonstrate some of my methods to make clean sharp turns with the scroll saw. These are things that I do that I have developed from reading and watching videos and doing hundreds of projects over about ten years. I still make changes or add twists to what I do from time to time. These methods may not be the only way or even the best way but they are some of the way I do things right now. Each person should develop their own techniques over time with experience. I hope what I show in this video can help someone start their own path to their own methods.
I saw this done in a magazine and had to try my version of it. I found a free vector graphic file and used it as a pattern. I used a separate bottom instead of cutting the bottom of the box. I changed my original body material because I did not allow for the extra width of the body when I cut the blanks. An unusual box but fun to make. I'm not sure how practical it is but is different.

I make a box with a sliding lid in this video. It is a simple box. The most critical part is getting the angles correct on the lid and keeping the lid from being glued to either the box body or the runners on each side of it while keeping it snug in between. This is just another way to handle the lid for a box. The pattern is a Steve Good pattern and the link to it is below.

This week we experienced a very long lasting ice storm here. We were without power most of two days and no internet for three. There are people north of us on the third day of no power, and counting. This put me off schedule for making and posting this week so I reached into my emergency bag and found this video that I stored just for such an event. Just a simple compound cut reindeer.

This video demonstrates the process of cutting a relief piece on the scroll saw.
Three factors determines the amount of raised or recessed relief, the angle, the direction of the cut and the size of the blade.
The smaller the angle, such as 3 degrees compared to 8 degrees, the larger the relief. A 3 degree angle will make a cut lift higher out of the original than 8 degrees will.
The direction of the cut will determine if it is a raised or recessed relief.
On a saw that tilts the work surface to the left a clockwise direction of cut will cause the cut piece to recess into the original surface. On the same saw a counter clockwise direction of cut will cause the piece to raise higher in relief in comparison to the original surface. If the saw tilts the opposite direction then the outcome is reversed.
The larger the blade then the wider the kerf (the width of the cut caused by removal of material by the blade) and therefore the higher or lower the cut piece will move.

I am working on a larger more complex project and and pressed for time. I did this little short video to have something to post on my usual weekly time. I will try to have a more involved project to post next week and I hope a video on the 'larger' project at a later date. This is another shadow art cut from baltic birch ply. The pattern is from a Steve Good set of patterns.

This pattern came from a book titled "Classic Fretwork Scroll Saw Patterns" by Patrick Spielman & James Reidle. 1991 It is available on Amazon and Thriftbooks. I used a little different thickness of wood for the headboard and footboard but otherwise followed the pattern. It is all walnut.

From a pattern by Steve Good. He calls it an infinity heart box from the design cut and attached to the lid. I wanted to try it because the walls are concentric rings cut from the same block of wood. That requires a very good cut between the walls to make them slide and rotate together properly. I like the way it turned out. The body is pine and rosewood laminated and the top and bottom are poplar. The lid design is cut from 1/8 inch rosewood. Link to pattern below.

I used a small portion of my scrap to create a block of wood from which I cut a box. Only 1/4 inch leftovers were used for this. I cut the scraps into 1 and 1/4 inch wide strips and small pieces and then laminated them into 5 and 1/2 inch long blocks. Five layers to a block to make the block 5 and 1/2 by 1 and a quarter in the other two sides. I then cut 1 and a quarter at a time off each block to get close to a perfect cube 1 and 1/4 in each direction. I then arranged them in alternating directions and glued them back together. 16 blocks in all to make one block of material to make the box. It took lots of gluing and sanding to get there. The block was too big for the scroll saw so I cut the lid and bottom on the table saw.

Another Carole Rothman project. She calls this one "Dizzy Bowl" She intended for scrap to be used for the blanks of this bowl and for each one to be unique to the builder and his/her circumstances. She called for scrap 3/8 material ripped and glued together in strips to create two indentical nine and a half blanks. I do not have that much 3/8 so I ripped strips long enough from various scraps to make the blanks. She suggested 3/8 so the blanks could be sanded smooth at 1/4. I ripped the material at 5/16 to save a lot of sanding, I do not have a sanding drum or machine planer. My plan worked very well, I made two indentical blanks at 1/4 that glued together made one 1/2 inch blank, that was the goal. Everything matched up very well and there was minimum sanding. I think it turned out very well.
